    Ammo shortage giving me gas

I don't shoot often enough; my ammo was probably 5 years old when I finally took my
son to shoot. Depleted my cache of 120 rounds of 9mm. Decided, hey, I'm a good shot,
I should shoot more. There is no 9mm anywhere. Big 5 has only "defense rounds", and
Cabela's, aka Bass Pro Shops is completely out of 9mm in two stores, both a drive for me.

Mail order to your abode is also no longer legal. I'm ready to learn to reload (and learn
primers are nowhere to be found either).

Where, oh, where do you find ammo for reasonable prices? There is gouging and that
gives me more than gas, but I like to be pleasant.
    Exhibit A: Winchester 9mm 50 round box: $20

Exhibit B: Winchester 9mm 50 round box: $50 (EDIT: This should be 100 rounds, that is $50 for 100 rounds, much more reasonable. My bad, sorry)

Do I really go to my local Big 5, say "I'm ordering ammo from far away" and have them
receive it? Do people do that in California?

If you read this far, you deserve a joke. How many tickles does it take to make a
octopus laugh? Ten tickles (say out loud).

Pic related: my son at the range, note the bullet holes in the partitions.

You must be joking. Didn't I just mention how expensive ammo is?

Your best bet is to find an FFL that will take ammo transfers from out of state, and then hope the online retailer is willing to send it to CA. Many places are charging fees per 500 rounds. Good luck.

If you believe the drought will be a lasting one, then reloading could still work. Bullets are coming down in price. Most gun powders work for most bullets, just cleaner or dirtier. Primers are the only thing that still is hard to find but can be for about $100/k.

Breaking that down at .07 per bullet, .02 per powder, free brass from ranges and .1 per primer, it's still .19 per bullet not including labor and sunk cost of the reloading unit. Most places are charging .35-.40 per round for 9mm.

I avoided it because it is next to the Waste Management Transfer Station, which smells just slightly better than the water treatment plant. However it is on the side closer to the bay/water so it gets an offshore breeze and does not stink at all. It was my first time there.

$25/shooter as of this posting, not bad, not busy either, range safety officer was older than Moses but with a great sense of humor, despite yelling at us for taking pictures in front of the yellow safety line. I was enamored enough to shop for ammo. Now here we are. But I don't gossip, I'm late to parties, and the last to know.

Thank you tabascoz, I quickly found primers and powers are hard to find, but bullets are still available, and reloaders are crazy expensive. But if one must contact an FFL to accept out of state ammo, well, there must be multiple avenues, but I'll try Big 5 to see what happens (i.e. ask them if they will do it).

If you and your son have fired 120 rounds in the last 5 years reloading is not for you.
If you think there is an ammo shortage then try to buy primers for a reasonable price. Powder and bullets are also in short supply.
Bass Pro has a ship to store for free feature when you buy online. Try it with ammo. They'll send you an email when it arrives and you can go pick it up.

Who told you that? I get ammo delivered to my house all the time, and yes I live in California. [emoji41]

                    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

you do not shoot enough to justify reloading, just keep buying at the range as you need to. Or try a lee wack a mole setup to start about $40.

Lee Loader is a complete reloading system, kit includes everything needed to reload, except a rubber mallet, that is not included.

                        120 rounds of 9mm is a “cache”?!
