    What would you have done?

I'm curious how my fellow Calgunners would have reacted in my situation.

I was leaving my building to take my AR to get worked on. It was in its black hardcase, which clearly is not your "typical" looking piece of luggage. I got into the elevator and the president of the homeowner's association got in at the next stop.

He looked at the hardcase, then asked me, "I hope that's not a firearm, is it?"

Now for a brief second, I thought about lying, just to make things easier. But for whatever reason (probably because I couldn't think of something good enough), I said, "It's a rifle."

At that, he looked agog at me and after a brief moment of silence, he said, with a look of worried disdain, "... is there something we should know about?", in a tone that implied I was somehow mentally unstable.

What would you have done? Lied? Told the truth? And in general, how do people feel about situations like these where you have to make a choice between lying to make things go smoother, or just answering the question straight?

    EDITED TO ADD:
I responded to his "is there something we should know about?" question with, "yes, actually..." then complained about the construction workers doing work improperly on the property.

President of the Homeowners association? Are you a member or how is this guy related to you? In other words, why does it matter what you said. I would have done the same thing BTW.

Exactly. I would probably have responded with asking how his day is. That or start talking about why something on the grounds isn't getting handled.

        NONE OF HIS BUSINESS.

Based on what you said he said, I would have responded with telling him that he is being rude.

I am a resident and a member of the association. But even so, as long as I am abiding by the law, it doesn't matter what I say to him, you're right. I was including his relation to me to clarify that it wasn't a stranger, but someone I may see quite often in the future.

If it was a stranger, it feels like it would be easier to be a total smart *** or ignore them completely.

i would just lie about it and move on. no need to make it known that you are a gun owner. not that i'm not proud, but no need to advertise it to my neighbors.

As a musician I have lots of guitars and equipment with similar cases to my gun cases. Although I don't hide the fact that I shoot from people I know, with a stranger or acquaintance I'd just lie and just tell them it's a guitar.

Actually, I think this is the best option.

I practice this in real life. I have no NRA stickers on my truck. I don't wear anything gun related or any logos of any kind. Not license plate frames, hats or key rings even.

If I am stopped by a LEO there is no reason to even think I am a gun owner and treat me any different then any other routine traffic stop (because there really isn't). If there is a bad guy looking for weapons, nothing on my house of cars/trucks would indicate my house has some in it.

I try to hide the fact that I'm a gun owner from folks I don't know only because I don't want anyone I don't know to know about any possible valuables that I keep in my home and that includes firearms.

In this situation, however? I think I would have a few strong words with him.

Based on your post, it appears that you felt it was clear that the question was being posed from a point of view that anyone with a rifle is not mentally competent. Like just having a rifle, in a case, on your person, somehow means you could be dangerous? That's like saying that someone with a car is obviously hell-bent on running down innocent people. C'mon!

I'd be hard-pressed to not "go off" on said individual, in a restrained but polite manner: "Excuse me? Are you implying that firearms ownership denotes mental incompetence? Do you understand that the rifle is the ONLY reason you live in (what used to be) a free country??? Do you realize that all of the "rights" that you take advantage of every day, including the right to demonize gun owners, stems from your ability to own a gun in the first place? I'm not going to tell you whether or not there's a firearm in this case because it's NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS but I would strongly encourage you to open your eyes to the world around you and not be such a little p**sy when it comes to the possibility of having a firearm nearby!"

But I'd be calm. I swear.

If it's someone who I could see genuinely interested, or has a chance of being educated, I'd tell the truth.

Otherwise, lie or divert the conversation. It's none of their business, and why make things harder for yourself (even when you are doing nothing wrong)? Besides, some people just want to stay in their pretty little safe world and I am fine with not changing that.
