    Selling RAWs

I have a couple of registered AWs. I am contemplating an overseas move for a few years and have no place/person to store them with. Probably not coming back to California so I should be able to replace them easily when I return.

I have considered three possibilities ( I live in the SF Bay Area):

    1. Make them featureless and sell locally. I would really hate to do that to these beauties, but that seems the easiest option.

    2. Sell them to a local FFL who is permitted to buy them. Don't know if such a person even exists, but that is one of the possible avenues the Cal DOJ lists.

    3. Drive them to Nevada (or Oregon) myself and sell them to an FFL over there. Anyone done this kind of thing and can recommend a place ?

Can anyone with experience getting rid of their RAWs weigh in with their experiences ?

    thanks.

Cannot sell to individual in Ca unless deregistered. Sell to dealer with license or sellout of state.

From what I've heard, de-registering it takes a long time and it's only available for those not banned by name.

You can't advertise it for sale while it's in CA regardless of where you plan on selling it.

YOU can't ship it out of state to a dealer to sell it.

YOU may deliver it to a CA FFL with an AW permit to sell it or ship it out of state.

YOU may personally deliver it to a dealer in another state to ship it or sell it to someone in a state that may legally own it.
      Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Only California FFL who have a Dangerous Weapons Permit can accept your rifle. This is the most convenient way, but if you consign them for out of state sell, they'll charge you their consignment fee and maybe some fee for advertisement and handling a assault weapon. The only way you can negate these extra expenses is if you have firearms that are very special that would sell for very high value; but bottom line, using the services of a permitted AW dealer will cost you.

Taking them out of state yourself to sell: Consider your time and expense to travel out of state just to sell them unless you live close to the border of a state where you can take them to. Those expenses will subtract from any money you hope to gain unless your making the trip for other purposes too.

Come on. I know kali gas is expensive but it's not like OR, NV, and AZ are thousands of miles away.

Hypothetically IF there were a couple of registered AWs...what would they be?

There are local pawn shops here in Kingman that buy used guns all the time. Depending on what they are you might be surprised at what they will give you. I have sold multiple firearms to them and still made good money. They could probably give you an estimate over the phone.

Keep the lowers and sell the rest any way you like.

Sell out of state to bypass all the illegal crap that California forces you folks to go through. You won’t get as much though because in free states they go for a lot less because so called assault weapons in California are nothing more than plain Jane under $1000 ARs in red states.

                  Good luck!

If they are rifles where the complete rifle is valuable either due to collector status (SP1) or physical design (AK style) or banned by name (SP1, etc.) then your only decent option is to drive out of CA, visit FFL dealers and get bids from them.

Going from S.F. to someplace in Oregon...say over 700 miles round trip to Medford just to name a place, is a long ways in my book. Fuel, meals, maybe a hotel if the eyes get weary...the bill could add up the farther away and the more time taken. Reno may be a better choice just from a transit point of view, done that from the SF/Bay Area plenty of times in my younger days. If there is nothing special about the rifles, all that to get the same or less money from some dealer in another state that he could possibly get here if the rifles were featureless as OP is considering.

Right, it's not like you have to make 2 trips 10 days apart. Hand it to shop owner, he squints at it and tries to run the price down. You say OK and he gives you money, and you go back to kali.

Sounds like you've never driven 700 miles in one day. It isn't that rough. I've driven twice that and more in one day. Compared to the hassle of de-registering and all the other BS of selling a gun in kali, it would be worth it to a lot of people.

I've heard of frustrations or delays for people wanting to de-register their RAWS, like those now wanting to convert to featureless. There was a recent thread on Calguns that I refer to below where it sounds like the poster got somewhere with information about who to contact and the process. If OP decides to go featureless, the thread may be of interest to him. Taking the firearms personally out of the state would certainly avoid any delays caused by bureaucracy, and is certainly a factor to consider in what do if one wants to take matters in one's own hands and sell fast.

I take those guns and sell them for calgunners.
