I'm looking for 1911 9mm mags. Who wins? I have Wilsons for my .45 and like those.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the major brands;

- Wilson

- Tripp

- CMC

- Metalform

Wilsons are the gold standard of 1911 magazine, everyone knows that.

Why are you needing or wanting to unload mags by hand?

If you need empty mags, buy some to keep empty.

Otherwise, all mags should be kept full at all times, otherwise your gun is an expensive paperweight. If nothng else, it makes range days more convenient to show up with a bunch of loaded mags, so you don't have to waste time loading up at the range.

Get out & shoot the mags & break them in a bit.

Why would anyone want to have any empty mags in today's world??

Well, "in today's world" ammo is hard to find even at high prices. Maybe, just maybe some cannot afford to keep all their mags loaded all the time.

I am a bit bummed at WC switching to a metal follower but I get it. Anything for reliable feeding with 9mm! But I still prefer plastic followers for shooting in LW frames. Does this just leave MecGar as the only 9mm mag with plastic follower?

I've read that Brownell's magazines are also excellent quality. Accorting to the interwebs, they're Metalform tubes with a black coating.

Same with Dawson Precision.

47D's were state of the art 20 years ago, but their are much better options now. The 47's have 8 rounds jammed into a 7 round tube. The Wilson ETM or Tripp Cobra mags have longer tubes and are a much better design.

The Wilson ETM mags are even the same price as the 47D, so there is no reason to buy new 47D mags.

Except that they work and when they pop up at my lgs they are often cheaper than the ETMs, which, btw, are indeed great mags.

Ramped barrels prevent the damage to aluminum frames that you are concerned about.

Nowadays the only manufacturer that refuses to use ramped barrels is Colt. And they charge a premium for this inferior product.

Not in my experience. One of a few companies I've never had an issue with.

I've had issues trying to insert fully loaded 47D's into the gun with slide forward (you really have to slam them home because they are so tight). The 8 round mags with the longer tubes (ETM and Tripp Cobra) are much easier to seat. It may not be a issue for some, but I'm using them for USPSA and I want every advantage I can get.
