    Wilson Magazines

I received my order of Wilson Combat 500-9B 1911 Elite Tactical Mags 9mm. These are not like the ones for my 1911 45's. These do not have the plastic follower. They are more like the factory supplied mags. They are almost impossible to empty a mag by hand. I had to rack the slide repeatedly to empty the mag This is the response I received when I questioned Wilson Customer service.
Yes, our 9mm mags feature the steel followers for reliability purposes and can be difficult to remove ammo from the mag by hand. It's this way by design because we want that follower to be consistent.
Does this sound plausible? What say you?

    1. Mags aren't meant to be emptied by hand.
    2. Wilson mags are awesome.

I know they are awesome, that's why I have several for my 45's.
However sometimes you need or want to empty a mag.

It’s pretty simple. The 9mm was adopted to work with the 1911. The magazine has to encase the cartridge to get it to work. Mec-Gar, CMC, Tripp, Ed Brown, Nighthawk...they all use metal followers. While most of them offer plastic followers in their 45 mags. The mag is not meant to be emptied by hand, but if you must its doable. I do it with my 1911 9mm mags.

Also, lets trade some mags, I’ll send you a few 1911 9mm mags for those faulty WC mags.

You are not at war, Do not jam 10 rounds in them and they will be easy to unloaded by hand.

I’ve never liked Wilson-Rodgers magazines, the tube walls are too thin and have sharp edges.

I suggest you try McCormick power mags. And I think the 9mm have metal followers too.

Single stack for 9mm allows for rounds to become separated.
It is the design of the case.
              Can see light between them.
This causes the contact area to be near the back, sharp 90* edge.

Slowly pushing the rounds out will cause nose dive or rear of case biting into round below it.
Some 9mm magazines have designed the body to help keep the round from nose diving.
If unloading by hand is important than maybe look for another magazine design.

Or try the Maglulu to unload magazine.

The Maglula UpLULA® is the easist universal pistol speed loader you'll ever use. It is small, light, and VERY good at getting rounds in your mags faster than any other loader I've used before!

They are difficult even with 1 round in them

I love my Wilson 9mm mags...tossed the SA mags that came with my Loaded...cause the Wilsons work great and are easier to load than any others I have tried.

Wilson 9mm ETM mags are hands down the best on the market in my humble opinion. Even better than Tripp Cobra mags...which are incapable of running a single round of my defensive ammo (Federal HST's) without jamming. "A little tough to unload" is an inconvenience, not a problem, IMO. They'll probably loosen up a little too once they're broken in.

Yup, Wilson 47’s have been my choice for the last 20 years or so. None better in my experience.

47D's were state of the art 20 years ago, but their are much better options now. The 47's have 8 rounds jammed into a 7 round tube. The Wilson ETM or Tripp Cobra mags have longer tubes and are a much better design.

The Wilson ETM mags are even the same price as the 47D, so there is no reason to buy new 47D mags.

This is not true. First, there's no reason to put less than ten rounds into a ten round magazine. Second, at least with Metalform mags, they don't unload manually easily, no matter how many rounds are in them.

I have Metalform 9mm 1911 mags, they hold ten rounds, run perfectly, and are a pain to unload by hand. I have no issue with this, as when I drop a mag from the gun with one or ten rounds in it, it falls clear with no issue, and no rounds bounce out of the magazine. Try that with Tripp mags, which are stellar performers, and you find that sometimes they stick in the gun as the top round has been dragged forward by the round being chambered, making the mag not drop free. They run perfectly as long as you don't want them to drop from the gun with rounds in them.

Like I said, the Metalform mags feed perfectly, and if I need to manually unload them, I just push the rear of the shell with an empty mag, and there's no issue.

If I have ten round mags, I'm loading ten rounds in them, with one in the chamber. Anything else is silly.

If they're anything like the Metalforms, they won't get any easier to manually unload. But as you said, it's an inconvenience, not a problem. Metalforms work as well as any others. I sold off all of my less than ten round 9mm 1911 magazines long ago, why bother with them, and the money paid for more than half the cost of upgrading to Metalforms.
