Why is the Glock base plate so different...

from most other base plates - Glock even sells a special accessory to assist in removing the plate

I don't think any of my other handguns base plates require a tool other than a hole punch to remove it

I cannot tell you why, but if I must remove the dang thing, I use a "C" clamp to assist. Even then it's a pain.

What am I doing wrong? Small screw driver to push out the floor plate, press on the sides then use the same screwdriver as a leverage to move the base plate. No fancy tool is required.

Pushing hard on the sides of the mag is needed before you push down on the little button and sliding the base plate out.

Yes, they are a pain to take apart.

protecting the magazine and using channel locks or a c-clamp will work, just seems silly to have to do that just to remove the base plate

Glock says its perfect, so you shouldn't need to remove it.

Sometimes there are after market base plates that are better than the stock ones. I've only replaced the base plates on my G36 magazines with Pearce +0 plates because they have the pinky groove.

Standard capacity Magpul Glock mags are MUCH easier to service. Not sure about the 10 round neutered ones.

It’s redundancy to ensure the magazine stays intact after dropping it.

Pretty much how I do it.

Back in the day when I bought dozens of Glock "rebuild kits" (remember those?), I used to assemble and dissemble Glock mags, especially when I went to Oregon to shoot at my friend's place.
