Being a gunsmith and frequent Calguns poster takes time. The guy is knowledgeable so he’s an asset to the community. Perhaps he could find a helper but that has its own perils.

This brings to mind the joke,

"Hey, you want some help with that?"

"No, but thank you. I'm in a hurry."

Dang Randall, if you quit taking all that time off for fishing you could get something done.

Brazing will qualify. Silver solder is a form of brazing albeit a low temp alloy.

Do your an expert in brazing and silver solders?

                The spec is melt point.

Silver soldering is actually a form of brazing.
Silver soldering is also known as silver brazing.

Traditional bronze/brass brazing would meet the federal guidelines just fine.
Brass brazing has a HIGHER melt temperature than silver solder though.

As bad as Silver solder is for a barrel, Brazing is even worse BECAUSE of the higher temperatures.

Barrels should never be heated up over 800 degrees F as that's their temper point.
                  Silver solder flows at 1200f.
The most commonly found pre-fluzed brass brazing rods flow around 1600f.

Either process leaves a barrel much softer than the barrel maker intended it to be.
Taking a steel barrel to 1200/1600 also trashes the finish if you don't do it in an oxygen free environment, leaving the barrel in need of a full refinish.

                    Who's that?
I have done thousands, like maybe 2-3, but certainly not 10's of thousands.
                    I did 17 this week.

I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression he was speaking of you. Because he said.

I think Randall is such a talented gunsmith because he was a professional machinist before he was a gunsmith, along with decades of experience gunsmithing and the shooting sports. There are no shortcuts for experience and natural skill and ability.

You can't get the penetration of TIG with MIG without putting in a LOT more heat than you do with TIG.
Then you have to deal with all the filler that builds up during MIG welding.
You can not do super small and clean welds with deep penetration with a MIG because the filler is the electrode.

Tig allows full control of penetration without any filler.

I don't use any filler in my perm attach jobs.
I just fuse the top of the pin into the edge of the drilled hole.

I wonder if Randall can make a shoulder thing that goes up for one of my assault y type guns that shoots a 30 shot clip in 3 seconds.

Too bad they closed down the Four and 20 on Van Nuys. I imagine that would’ve been a good place to wait. A little Welsh Rarebit never hurt anybody.
