I'd also pay attention to the followers, I would think most likely the counterfeiters would stick with the cheap green followers rather than the grey magpul ones. Thanks for the write up.

Older magazines have aluminum followers. Plastic followers in whatever colors are relatively newer.

Interesting thread. So I had to look. Haven't looked at my 20 and 30 rounders in years. Bought mine in the 80's. No counterfeits here. Wish I bought more. They were a dime a dozen for $4 each. All my 20 rounders have alloy followers. Some are marked .223, some are marked 5.56. I'm surprised, being military surplus, that they were marked AR-15. But the link in the previous thread shows that they are authentic. Most are Colts with a couple of Simmonds. My 30 rounders are Adventureline. No stamps on the magazine bodies. None of my standard cap mags have been used since the 90's.

This may have been covered by the links above but I'll chime in just in case. I have RAWs from the '90s and, as a consequence thereof, a lot of 20 and 30 round mags from way back when. I have not looked in all of them but I'm certain at least some have date stamps on the INSIDE of the magazine. If you have old mags take them apart and check.

Anyone know how pervasive this is? What about more recent production? It would not be good if someday someone were pinched by the po-po and claimed their mag was pre-2000 or something and not recently imported, only to find out the mag they "found" had a date stamp on the inside that they didn't know about showing recent manufacture.

I heard pmags have date stamps. So just to be clear I'm talking about older GI aluminum mags.

Sorry to not have all the details off the top of my head. But figure someone out there will know more and can clarify.

Regarding the subject of this thread, I'm guessing the fake mags don't have an internal date stamp.

Nice write up and subsequent postings.
I know mine are genuine, the alloy followers were worn out so I had to replace them.

                            .
All my Bushmaster 30 rnd mags have a date stamp on the exterior of the body as MM YY. And they are high quality though not quite a nice as my Colt 20's.

Not sure about your date stamp concern though. During Freedom Week Californians could have bought, sold, traded old mags that were produced at any time prior to Freedom week.
A mag stamped post Freedom week would be an issue now but hopefully not for long.
