Multi-Gun PPT: Too Much Paperwork??

To avoid being nothing but negative. And to support those good FFLs, I have to give credit to Glaser Arms in Brentwood for being great! I’ve done a couple PPTs there recently and they were very easy and smooth. No appointment BS, no restricted hours for PPT, just a great guy helping out the firearms community and running a great business! I will be spending money there in the future.

I've never tried but they are required to by law. I doubt the clerk's would know what the F they are doing.

I did one there once when nobody else would due to the impending EBR ban. Took almost 2 hrs. Manager had to finish what she was doing, go in the office to get walked through it on the phone, fax it to upper mgt for review, etc.

I sold 4 handguns in one transaction 3 months ago.....no issues except, yeah, more papers.

Zach at Glaser Arms in Brentwood is legit. Not only is he super accommodating and helpful, his FFL transfer fee is $50... in 2020... that's Kevin Smith pricing! He's one of the good guys for sure, and he will continue to get my business!

I've learned to call ahead, and if there is any possible "issue" make sure the FFL is OK. I've done a couple multiple buys (multiple sellers) on one DROS - one was fine up front, the other wasn't sure about it, and had me check back, at which time they confirmed it was no problem.

In both cases I co-ordinated with the sellers to meet at the same time, with all papers in order, the "paperwork" took no time at all. With the increased DROS fees, I'd rather do a couple at once, The added gun is at most an additional $10, and one FFL even did the second without charge.

I also had a buyer doing multiple purchases, had him set up the meet with the other seller and myself.

Take the initiative, if one store won't do the PPT/DROS, go to the next one...

Things are particularly messed up right now, but that just means do your due diligence, and the transaction should go smoothly.

We need to start naming these FFLs publicly. Do not start a thread like this and leave out the FFL name.

And we need to start reporting them to Michel & Associates for a lawsuit against Ca for giving us no practical, reliable, legal way to conduct transfers among ourselves.

We also need a sticky thread where these FFLs are listed, so we can quickly exclude those FFLs from ever getting our business.

I will name them, sorry BennyW, hope you don’t mind. It was J&R sports in Livermore.

Had this happen to me and another CG’r on Friday. On Target in Mission Viejo ONLY does PPT M-F between the hours of 10:30-11:30am and 4:30pm-5:30pm.

Ended up at a low key FFL near Irvine who had no wait and were in/out in 15 minutes.

I had a similar experience yesterday. I was meeting someone in Livermore to get a single gun via PPT. I called J&R to confirm that they would do the transfer, and their voicemail announcement clearly explained their policy (lawful or not), and an employee soon answered and was able to reassure me that the restrictions explained in the message accurately reflected their current policy.

I was fine with that. Why? Many of the FFLs in my area (Sacramento) outright refuse to perform PPTs of any type. Many are extremely difficult to contact in a timely manner, and I have gone out of my way to meet sellers at their FFL of choice only to be turned away after standing in line for a while.

I was able to get my Livermore PPT done at Solar Tactical, which was great because they're a friendly, efficient shop where I already had a new gun in jail. But they've chosen to stop answering the phone ("Hi, I want to buy a gun. What's a good one? Are Glocks legal?") in order to focus on counter business, so I had no idea if they would perform a PPT. When you have a fellow Calgunner carving time out of their life and driving long distances to transfer a gun, the potential for a simple transaction turning into a frustrating safari to find an accommodating FFL is a very real problem. Having a sure bet with a few limitations is reassuring at a time when the firearms industry is slammed by record demand, with scant product for retailers to profit from but hordes of customers requiring full staffing.

After taking a number at Solar and swiftly doing my transfer (plus buying ammo, which they had in stock), I dropped by J&R. It was pretty sleepy. No lines, a couple of customers, employees and friends discussing a lunch order. If that's how they like to do business and can stay in business, good for them. I'd like to hope there's room in the market for people to take things at their own speed.

Are FFLs in the wrong for setting their own policies for the kind of transactions they want to conduct? Maybe. But pushing them to engage in trade they don't want seems unseemly. Gun shops close when proprietors decide it's no longer worth their while. And I've seen way more closures than new places opening up.

I know people like to bash on Turner’s, but they’ll definitely do PPTs without the bull****. They might smack talk you for it, but they’ll do it. Hell, the Rocklin one got so pissed off about being asked all the time that they put a sign on the door “As required by law, we do conduct PPTs”.

The Sacramento ones haven’t been requiring appointments either. Nor Cal Gun Vault will also do them, just sign up for an appointment online the day before.
