I wouldn't have kicked you out. I didn't see anything that would've given me a bad vibe. I am not a RO but I've had to help out at my local range. You can always see the difference between BS and the legit shooters/handlers

No way. I wasn't saying you were being unsafe. Just stating a fact. I am completely on your side here. ROs can be just as bad as the new shooters in any aspect

Are you saying you would also have looked for the real RO?

If the power tripper kept bugging me then ya. But most times I just let things go. I had a guy give me a hard time for laying my guns down on the right side. Being a left handed shooter, I naturally lay them on their right. I understand why because he wanted to see the open chamber without having to stop and flip it himself. I just had to remember for next time.

^^^ At least you understand the reason for the rule. That is a very common rule at all ranges and not one that steps on peoples feeling so they have a reason to whine. I DID NOT say you were doing that.

If this is an anomaly and not how the range runs, then why did you post about it at all? Cool story bro.

then later this idiot wanted me to be to the side of my rifle because the butt of my rifle was a few inches behind the back of the bench. So he did NOT want me straight behind the rifle to manage recoil. IDIOT

Another rangemaster put him in his place after I explained. What a moron.
Range rules, like most all rules, are designed with the lowest common denominator moron in mind. You should always have your AR platform rifle safety switched to "On" when loading or unloading on the firing line (combat reloads while shooting excepted)...anytime that bolt is back from the closed position. I was taught that there is always a possibility, without the safety engaged, for an AR/M4 type rifle to fire when releasing a retracted bolt on a full magazine. Also with the danger of negligent discharges while loading / unloading. Engaged safety anytime the bolt is retracted prohibits that and the safety gets disengaged "when the shooter makes the conscious decision to fire the weapon". The only ND I have seen while training was while loading a AR on line. The offender went home immediately. I could never be a RSO at an open to the public range given all the stupid, unsafe moronic things I have seen gun owners do at a range, with a loaded gun, much less unloaded.

I do not want to be defending one of the many RSO's worldwide on an unnecessary power trip but...look at all the morons they have to deal with all the time undoubtedly driving them To be the SOB's they are. That said, anyone catastrophically screwing up on his watch, its his job and possibly the range's continued existence in the balance. On the other hand, asshats are asshats working as RSO's or shooting at public ranges...

How many rifles out there won't let you open the bolt with the safety 'On'? How, exactly, does one open the bolt and leave the safety on in that situation?

                          .

Now I am confused...What kind of gun is it? Based on your opening post, I assumed (incorrectly ) it was an AR platform rifle for which there is both a good reason and standard military practice to justify a safety on with an open bolt.

Ruger makes several models with a detachable magazine. Even then, just about every other bolt action with an internal mag has a hinged loading door that can be left open.
