I haven't been to a range with a rangemaster in at least 40 years with one exception being the indoor range in Reno. I have not missed them what so ever.

One shot per second is fast enough for practicing good slow-fire anyhow, but if I'm practicing double or triple taps I like to check with the RSO first to see if they'll OK it if they have a 1rd/sec rule. Evans in Orange gave me the OK right off the bat as long as I 'didn't act stupid'. They were cool about it.
This. I try to go to the range at odd times when no one else is there. The one of the RSO's will sometimes let me practice double or even triple taps. Others will tell me to slow down even if I am firing in a controlled manor around a second apart.

I have found that if I bring something unique or rare I get left alone more. If I bring a C96, a cap and ball revolver, an M1, FN49, antique Winchester or Marlin, or something like that and fire a few rounds from that first before I take out my modern stuff it shows them I am a serious collector. Usually they come over to admire the piece. I have a good conversation with them and usually we are cool. The tacti-cool mid 20's guy trying to impress his arm candy GF scare me and I don't blame some of these RSO's for assuming everyone is an idiot until proven otherwise.

I actually do the same thing when I go to the range; try and put a couple rounds through my C&R stuff before I pull out anything modern, and usually it gets me left alone or someone asking about the old stuff I got.

I will admit though some of the RSO's tick me off sometimes, mostly due to ignorance rather than the rules themselves.

Fun one was having to explain to an RSO that I can only chamber flag an AK because the bolt won't lock back (range had a chamber flag plus bolt in the locked back position rule when it was cold) and having to watch the guy spend a half minute attempting to lock the bolt back on an AK without any success, before getting annoyed and walking away from the "Commie piece of junk".

Also had to be civil with another RSO that ran up to me screaming I'm going to cause an accident because I brought an Arisaka and a Carcano to the range, and kept telling me they were going to blow up in my face if I shot either of them. 50 rounds apiece in each of them he just wrote off as "You got lucky. Don't bring them back or they'll blow up in your face."

I do make it a point to ask RSO's if I can draw and shoot with a holstered handgun or if I want to do 3 round strings of fire before I do that, simply because I have seen enough new guys/mall ninja's do mag dumps just to impress a girl or get social media followers and end up putting rounds in the ceiling or the ground.

When I worked at a range we were allowed to shoot as we saw fit. That said, when there were other people there, I wouldn’t do it because of monkey see monkey do and I’m not real fond of telling someone about the 1 second rule when I was just doing double tap drills.

then later this idiot wanted me to be to the side of my rifle because the butt of my rifle was a few inches behind the back of the bench. So he did NOT want me straight behind the rifle to manage recoil. IDIOT

Another rangemaster put him in his place after I explained. What a moron.
Im personally a range officer and volunteer time at the range I am a member of. I dont power trip at all. The rules are different for every range you go to in California and Range officers themselves tend to set their own unwritten rules sometimes. I understand that this makes for an environment that people almost certain to break or simply not know a rule. So I leave people alone for the most part, unless they are committing some type of egregious safety violation.

I will say this though. I personally would have kicked you out the range. For me as a range officer to ask someone to do something no matter how weird they might find it and instead that person make some snarky comment as a rebuttal. I wouldn't want you and most of all I wouldn't trust you on my firing line and I would have kicked you out. Understand that they are the range officer and you are not. They are there to keep everyone safe and yes some range officers at some ranges do over reach, but quite frankly its your choice to be a patron of that range or not. You need to respect the people whos job it is to maintain safety in an environment where latterly everyone is wielding something that can injure or kill you.

I never said I didn’t put the stupid safety on. I did. I followed it up with a question about the 1911.

I followed his rules up until the point it would actually affect my target results.

At that point I pulled the bolt, took out the mag, put the rifle on “safety” and found a real RO.

So yeah, if you would have kicked me out for following your rules then you’re just another one of those power tripping range officers. Actually you’re worse than this guy and frankly with your attitude you shouldn’t be able to be a crossing guard.

You should NOT be a RO

If the range officer tells you that you have to shoot your rifle in a way that will make your groups open from .25-.5 MOA to .75-1.0 MOA are you going to listen to him?
