    In general, for any given caliber,

    Pistols with a shorter (lighter) slide in the same caliber need heavier springs to prevent the slide from hitting the back of the gun with enough force to damage the frame.

    Pistols with a heavier slide in the same caliber need a lighter spring as there is more impulse energy being absorbed by the mass of the slide.

    Look into full size 9mm guns like a Beretta 92, Glock 34, or 9mm 1911.

    Really though, it's more about using proper technique then the equipment. If your friend can manipulate a 20lb object then they can manipulate the slide.

      They make slide racking assists for various guns including glocks and 1911 that slide on and give something easier to grab.

        Teach him how to sling shot the slide. Works well for folks will weak hand strength.

            I know a number of older people who have trouble griping a slide. Gym is not the answer. External handles make it a lot easier.
