Rifle Marksmanship ?

I have a couple "target" rifles, but by and large my rifles are meant for hunting. I use the bench to sight the rifle in and verify the rounds I am using are on point. After that I shoot from every conceivable safe position. Because:
All that. I'll use a post at the range to simulate a tree, use my range bag to simulate my pack from prone, shoot across my portable tool box to simulate a rock, sitting, kneeling, offhand...Buy made in USA whenever possible.Comment

Nra high power is off hand, sitting, and prone. I never see anyone practicing any positions unless it’s a guy from the Burbank or Santa margarita club. I bet most shooters don’t know their zeros past 100 yards.
Come kamela and the gun grab do you think you’ll be shooting off a bench seated in the open against the woke Stalinist comrades crowd? Hardly.
And if it ain’t scored, it didn’t happen. Yea yea we all know the guys who shoot 3” groups at 600 yards in shifting 20 mph winds. They’re called liars.Last edited by bubbapug1; 08-16-2020, 10:11 AM.I love America for the rights and freedoms we used to have.Comment

Isn't this what practical rifle competitions like PRS and 3 Gun are all about?Comment

I'm one of those Burbank guys.
Still shooting iron sights even though optics are allowed for Service Rifle. Know my zeroes for 200, 300 and 600 yards.
Really satisfying to shoot an X at 600 yards, even if it's just 1 out of 20 shots.
Shame the Navy matches scheduled for next month at Pendleton have been cancelled.

never got into any high speed target shooting, just .mil basic marksmanship quals, CQB drills, and PWCs day and lowlight..
prone, kneel, standing is all that's required for marksmanship quals.. the PWCs of course are shoot n scoot so improvised shooting positions required
there are several unclass docs on the interwebs you can download for more info.. this is a good one - https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA544533.pdf
I started out with nothing - and I still have most of itComment

Yeah,... you and this cat! SO much in common.

Yes, I shoot prone & offhand mostly on my mountaintop...need to start doing some sitting & kneeling though.

I don't like shooting off the bench (especially the concrete bench at ASR).
I like shooting in seated position. Very comfortable, stable, and get shade from the bench next to me.
I'm usually the only guy shooting in this position at the range.

I have Kaiser. It ducks. They had me in blood pressure medicine that increased my heart rate to 110 resting. In bed.
Shooting sitting was impossible. The pulse was off the charts.
So I can say if you want to be an expert or master at marksmanship don’t go to Kaiser.I love America for the rights and freedoms we used to have.Comment

I usually shoot standing, only because I figure "runnin' & gunnin'" will be the order of the day when it comes.
Most of the other positions are for you youngsters... because you can get UP from them in less than a minute - unlike us old guys!

This is also my favorite go to field position for hunting. Line of sight usually high enough to get over small vegetation, and minor terrain changes. I can get in it fairly quick. It is still comfortable for me thankfully and I am almost as accurate(for hunting accuracy) as prone up to 300 yards or so. So most of my field range work is done sitting. I however do not cross legs due to some ankle discomfort and my long torso anatomy likes the legs/feet spread, knees bent more, and a bit more upright.Last edited by theduracellbigd; 08-18-2020, 8:53 AM.Comment

Sounds like this position. I like my legs spread open too. (That's what she said...)This is also my favorite go to field position for hunting.
