    Rifle Marksmanship ?

Hi Calgunners, share how many of you get opportunities to shoot field positions (off hand ,sitting, kneeling ,prone)with your rifle? If so do you practice all of them or only select ones and why? Some ranges force you to use a bench, some like the bench for comfort or due to physical limitations, and a bench is good for working on loads/accuracy. I personally find myself on the bench working on loads/accuracy sighting in etc., but I tend to stay there too long because it is comfortable(kinda like my couch and tv haha) When I finally get off the bench I am glad I did for the challenge and gained proficiency with my rifle. I can only shoot kneeling for a few shots due to a couple ankle injuries and surgery's. All others are pain free luckily.

There is a national guard training area a couple miles from my house, and they leave the back gate open if the are not doing training. We set steel plates out to 500 yds, and train however we like. My daughter's can already transition between carbine and sidearm, or use the rangefinder in the prone to adjust their rifle dope....

I have very often been the only person at Burro Canyon shooting Indian style or prone on an isomat down on the deck next to the bench. The bench is just where I keep all my trash.

When I get the range to myself i run around like a fool with plates and carrier running all kinds of drills. Prone I don't practice much but fast mag changes, dumps, kneeling, running, walking, going to sidearm, hiding behind cover...

I shoot off the bench for load development. The rest of the time I'm shooting off the sticks, prone or sitting.

I spend the bulk of my shooting time from field positions, practicing sidearm transition skills, use of movement, cover, etc. Our club range complex has some ranges specifically set up for this, and can be used 24-7.
Only time I use one of the benches is primarily for load development.

I need to practice more off bench shooting.

Should also look into small piece of mat to prevent giving myself a butt surprise or broken kneecaps.

At ranges that allow me to I try to get off the bench and do prone supported/prone unsupported shooting from a shooting mat + sandbag.

I get enough off-hand shooting at indoor ranges and frankly kneeling position shooting was my least favorite/least comfortable position to shoot.

Wouldn't mind getting a shot at some shooting off of barricades/ transition drills with a carbine and pistol at 25-50 yards.

Once in awhile I’ve brought my shooting mat and shot prone next to the bench at Angeles and they’ve never said anything.

barricade drills is what i wanted to try next time i go out to burro's private range.

i just need to get off my butt and buy some plywood to make it.

Yup, bench for sighting on and load development otherwise it's offhand and on the move.

I already know I can shoot sub MOA from a decent rest - those are hard to find in the field.
