PSA: Follow the D*mn range rules!

Had a eventful day at OC indoor range today. I saw two different people fondling firearms in the back counter and LOADING their firearms before turning around to shoot their target.

I was also peppered by the guy next to me shooting birdshot who - somehow - missed the freaking paper target place at 3 yards and hit the metal hanger.

Seems like going in on weekday afternoons won't help you avoid the newbs anymore.

Perhaps a CEASE FIRE would have been in order to alert RSO

A lot of indoor ranges will not allow birdshot because it can bounce off the bullet stop on the back wall.

There's really no such thing at OC indoor. Only one guy was working today to filter people in and out.

A while back, 2 tactard Bros wearing Grunt Style shirts did the same thing and Angeles range. RSO came running down the Pway and started yelling at them and rightly so.

That sucks but it's your hide if SHTF so yell it out and sort it out before someone gets hurt or worse, Or you could just leave.

Some people need training before they ever put ammo in a gun. There was a guy at the local range who couldn't put a shot on a silhouette target at 7 yards.

Yup, I left to avoid the ensuing drama. Let the front staff know what was going on.

Indoor ranges at least do a cursory safety test before renting out a firearm, but not to people who bring their own firearms. Scary...

I was at in indoor range once and two young ladies in the early 20's came in. It was immediately obvious they had never handled guns before. The RO showed them some basics such as how to load the magazine. The RO did not stick around. And when I say "RO" I really mean the guy who runs the register and rents the guns, not a true safety officer. They were in the far right lane with 3-4 other lanes to their left were occupied. I was in the far left lane. The first girl loads a mag and fired her first shot. She immediately turns to her left, gun in hand, finger on trigger, and sweeps the rest of the room and pointed the gun at her friend who was of course recording this on her phone. She was laughing, OMG Becky, that's crazy!

I stepped up and got her to lower the gun and point it back down range. I tried to provide some basic instruction and stressed to never point the gun anywhere except down range. I soon got the heck out of there.

Now he knows why cops don't just shoot the gun out of the badguy's hand...

With all of the new gun owners and friends who come along with them to the range, it's only a matter of time before there will be a negligent discharge!

I know it's hard to be "that guy" that calls a cease-fire when a shooter muzzle sweeps the room. I have gotten into verbal altercations with other shooters because I called a cease-fire and went over to the people who obviously needed to be re-instructed on the 4 rules of gun safety. They felt that they were being safe, but clearly they weren't.

How do we as a gun community try to reinforce range rules and gun safety with those who don't want instruction?

                        1. Treat all guns as if loaded (even when you know they aren't).
                        2. Never point the muzzle at anything you aren't willing to destroy.
                        3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
                        4. Know your target and what is beyond it (avoid all collateral damage).

                              PSA = Public Safety Announcement

Not everyone on Calguns is an experienced gun owner, especially post-covid/riots/panic buying. This thread is an insight to those new gun owners of what the guy in the stall next to you is seeing and what they are aware of.

This is also a friendly reminder to other range members to be attentive, explain what I experienced today, and what to watch out for.

The last thing we need is for anti-gun politicians to shut down ranges over negligence.
