And spare us the “there is no market” babble. You guys seem to look the other way when companies put stuff on sale. In fact there is a whole forum dedicated to such hypocrisies. Also, if there was no such thing as ‘market’ everything would sell for msrp, even second hand. Every product would have a fixed price for its lifespan. There would also be no such thing as haggling.

The fact that most of you here are cheap skate penny pinchers is proof that market pricing exists. The act of ‘shopping around’ is participating in the ‘market’ for Pete’s sake.

This is absolutely no different. Anytime there's any kind of a markup on anything, I will walk away. I wouldn't pay a markup for anything. I can live without it.



When people try to sell firearms for massive markups, that is generally indicative of a person that would take advantage of someone else at every opportunity.

You are literally defining the relationship of supply and demand which determines the function of the "market value" curve . No matter the cause - pandemic, natural disaster, civil unrest, etc. - price in free market capitalism is a function of supply and demand. Why do cases of water sell for $100 post-hurricane disaster? Fear, panic, destruction, and slow disaster response decreases the supply of an essential product necessary for human life. That is the "true" value of water in a disaster situation without government enforcing market controls.

Key concept: Free Market Capitalism. Despite what most on this forum would think, this is not an economic system we'd want to run a society. In other words, you're correct. Individuals should not be allowed to price gouge drinking water during a natural disaster because it denies those victims basic human rights. We see these same controls on free market capitalism with child labor laws, standardizing the "40 hour" work week, and OSHA regulations.

The point: Market value is not a lie; it is a concept in which the buyer and seller agree to terms - which includes price, condition, circumstances and environment. You're access to water example is not what is occurring in the calguns marketplace. Firearm ownership is not essential to human life (in the literal sense); society has agreed that market controls should not apply to secondhand products like firearms.

What is happening now is similar to the multi-year .22lr rimfire shortage post-Sandy Hook. Supply has not decreased; demand has risen exorbitantly. Firearm manufacturers are pulling 24hr shifts to meet unprecedented demand from the influx of new gun owners. For those who refuse to wait and pay MSRP, they are forced to look to the secondary market for the self-percieved fear of needing a firearm *immediately* (after "cooling off" for 10 days to squash their ill-intentions, of course). This is why $500 Glocks are selling for $700-$900 in the marketplace.

Does this suck for us normal gun guys? Hell yeah. I was in the process of purchasing a Beretta M9A1 right when the pandemic hit. The gun shop wouldn't honor the sale price because of the influx of buyers. Sucks, but that's life. I am not a buyer in this market. Like yourself, I refuse to pay inflated prices until the market normalizes.

I would bet that the folks that have the foresight to spend possibly years accumulating firearms and ammo, and see a potential opportunity for their investment to pay off and take it, are not the same kind of folks that look for every shortcut in life ie trashing others to stand out etc.

I agree. Nothing wrong with profiting from ones "investment". This is "capitalism".
