Unlike most of these internet guys pushing bull**** I actually shoot almost everyday and have killed a lot of stuff with a shotgun. Also Don’t forget bird shot comes in all size and 3-1/2 shells.
Just re-read all previous posts. No one said bird shot wasn’t lethal. Larger bird shot being the better choice. Paul Harrell has a YT video on that.

At close range, you still need to aim a shotgun, whether it’s loaded with bird or buck. At 21 feet, not yards, 7 1/2 bird, #4 buck or 00 buck, the pattern will be closer to the size of your fist.

I think it boils down to this. Will the armed bad guy in your home still have time to stab, club or shoot you before you Can fire a second round because your first round did not completely incapacitate them?

Just imagine what penetration would be like if these blocks of gel were wearing a leather jacket....

That's not the concern. It's getting hung up as it feeds that's the issue.

          Quality JHPs are fine

Seriously, even regular ammo sends the perp running (or falling) - better he bleeds outside, not on your spouse's carpet.
