It's hit and miss with these new guys. I have dealt with a few and they are current or ex LEO who probably don't want a history. I figure as long as we meet at the store in person it is good. I also write a receipt for us to sign when doing these transactions.

True, its just too bad Paypal is an awful company. We should not support them.

Sucks OP. Sorry that happened. From now on, I'd never allow a 3rd party to negotiate a deal. And I'd never give money to anyone that doesn't have well established feedback.

I've had transactions with new members before and all have gone well for me, luckily. But I also take certain pre-cautions. I'll only do face to face transactions with people with under 10 itrader score. With well established members, I'm comfortable transferring money sight unseen.

Why do we allow members with zero posts and zero reputation to post in the marketplace? I've never understood why we do this. You should have to have at least 200 posts to be even allowed in there. This would eliminate so much of the scams.

Everyone deserves a chance to start somewhere right? So they have to buy like 5 or 10 things from here and establish first and then be allowed to sell?

If someone had zero posts I would ask them to create a posting on eBay and then buy it from there. That way you have some assurance that you will either get the product or your money back.

I just completed (picked up purchase after 10 day cooling off) a purchase from a new member.

I'm also a new member... transaction went very smoothly, we met at the FFL, once I had completed all the paperwork, I sent him the $$$..

There are ways to check someone out, and get a feeling if they're legit or not.

I don't think banning everyone who is a new member from the for sale section is really fair. Requiring a certain number of posts will encourage people to just post to increase their post count, but it will decrease the quality of postings....

Anyway... my thoughts. But hey... I'm a newbie, so I could be wrong.

Some of us low post guys lurk around reading but rarely post, and not everyone gives an I trader rating on transactions. I've bought about 5 guns off the marketplace and sold several as well but I never got I trader ratings for some of them. I think it's always best to do face to face and judge each transaction on your gut feeling. If it doesn't feel right just walk away save yourself the hassle.

I can scroll through the marketplace at any given moment and find numerous “Is it still available” or “I’ll take it” from a brand new member. 99% of the time they have zero intention of buying, I imagine they are here to stir up ****. Requiring a few posts ahead of time would alleviate some issues.

Yes, this scam has been going for years and not just here but in every forum across the land where WTB posts can be found. Motorcycle parts, car parts, watches, sneakers, you name it.

Always be looking for it. A new member offering you something or giving you the 'I know a guy' bit is a scammer, 9999 times out of 10,000. And if your account is also new fish on the forum, the sharks will be swarming when you post a WTB.

But looks like I'm $200 in the hole. Lesson learned
                                Life lesson:
If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Was the price the scammer offered you a really good deal for whatever item they were offering?

That's usually the basis for these scams.
They find someone who is looking for something and then they offer a really good price.
This gets the potential victim really excited to get the great deal and hopefully the joy of finding the great deal overcomes the reality that it could be a scam JUST LONG ENOUGH for payment to be sent.
Now that you have sent payment, you can probably look back and see that the symptoms were all there and that you just didn't see them because you were so excited to send that money asap!
