The open desert around Barstow is fine to fire in. It's always been that way. Calico Mountain area or a little farther at the Yermo exit is Mule Canyon Road people fire there all the time.

Or take the Daggett exit on I-40 (aprox 7 miles North of Barstow) and go east on the service road which after approx. 1/2 a mile or so turns into a dirt road called Camp Rock Road - go a mile or so and find an area against a mountain/berm to fire at. This entire area east of the Daggett exit is BLM land and open carry is allowed also. But you know the deal don't fire across roads, etc.

Go in Hodge road from route 66 side. Nice drive from Victorville along wash. Less people.

Yup, did the same thing on Sat 5/16. It was actually the first time I had ever shot at Hodge. I'd heard it was busy, but I just figured people were exaggerating. Nope, it was damn busy.

I went with a buddy of mine, and neither of us had ever shot anywhere that had a steady ringing of ricochets like we experienced where we set up at Hodge.

THIS! 66 is a nice drive and coming in from that side is usually all but empty when I've gone.

The Idle Spurs closed down. Best steaks & drinks in the area, now just a memory. It was one of the things that I looked forward to when in Barstow. Sad.

Monday morning CHP had a woman in a wheelchair pulled over on northbound I-15 just before 58.
Everything is back to normal in Barstow.

Is the food at the Barstow Del Taco somehow better than that at other Del Tacos? I thought they would all be the same.

Yes, absolutely! The owner still works behind the drive thru counter (Julie). All three Barstow locations work hard to maintain their reputation. When you order a macho burrito, you get a MACHO burrito. The other Del Taco seem to use the same "mystery meat" that Jack uses. I find the meat at the Barstow stores have a more hamburger texture. Not saying it is, but tastes way better.

Yeah. Those are the original del tacos and have stuff the other ones dont and it does taste different/better. Last year they did bring the carnitas burrito to the other southern cali location for a limited time.

on another note. Ended up at hodges last sunday because we kinda got lost trying to find a good spot at blm. That place is really crowded now. To much people to be "safe". Gonna try out the other recommended locations.

Any other ones besides the ones mentioned?

There is a place to the left(west)of the old Yermo dump (closed). I have seen shooters there on my RZR rides. You take I15 to the Minneola exit north of Yermo and turn left at the stop sign. Google it. Look for the dump, just west of the dump there is a small ravine. That is where I have seen shooters. The dump road is also the road to the early man site, which is also closed now due to the Hantaviruse. They had a bad mouse infestation.
