Not necessarily. Sometimes you're stuck in a crappy no win situation, and you just have to address the biggest threat and just hope for the best. In this case I'd say the bigger threat to your safety is the guy that just attacked you. Bad guy car isn't cleared so wouldn't want to approach it and use it as cover, and you don't want to lose visual on bad guy, which leaves you unfortunately hanging out in that lane. Hopefully cars coming up behind see the lights, slow down and move over.

      Amazing reflexes.

      Don't understand the car occupant.

Went to jail for the incident - tried to hit the officer with an empty cable locked AR15. No criminal record mentioned. Nothing about rifle being stolen. Not sure why he felt the need to attack the officer after the two women he was driving with - were picked up and left.

      Very strange and incomplete story.

Strange. So maybe not on drugs. Just broke down. Maybe just trying to give the rifle to the officer so he didn't have to find it himself. He wasn't threatening the officer and only threw it defensively after being shot.

I feel like he just made some stupid choices and somehow thought he was doing the right thing. I'm not sure how else to explain it. If he was going for suicide by cop he would have pointed it at the officer--me thinks.

Kudos' to the officer and his training; in a threat I think 1.2 is seriously good.
The real world examples cannot ever be as fast as timed records, because all someone like Munden has to think about is the buzzer. The cop goes from normality to “oh, Crap!” All before he starts to draw. He has to realize he suddenly needs to draw before his hand starts to move.

When you dont know its coming, theres a lot more to a draw than waiting to do it fast when the buzzer goes.

Not saying you dont know all this, HM, i am just musing out loud.

Plus, not saying the officer considered this, but the bad guys car was paritially intruding into that lane, too. Nobody is going to come along with tires on the fog line.

IIRC Tom Cruise after 3 days practice could draw and fire in under 1 second.
              From the movie, Collateral !
              Yes Im an impressed !

NRA during a seminar had 3 seconds at 3 yards and 3 shots .

Come out and shoot USPSA Steel Challenge, drag racing with a gun from a draw, hands start above the shoulder. There are guys who can draw and shoot 5 plates in 1.62 secs.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

Getting a draw under 1-sec is very doable and within the limits of human function. And as already mentioned, the hard part is doing it consistently (grip strength, grip angle, natural point of aim, trigger press, etc.) that allows one to get a good hit at distance.

3 targets at 3 yards in 3 seconds is actually quite slow... As mentioned by @BrassCase - 5 plates in 1.62-sec. This would be, say, a 0.7 hit to draw plus 0.23 splits/transitions... That said, it has been mentioned in a few forums/instructors that drawing from a "wrist above shoulders" can match the speed of drawing with "hands at side" because there is time/distance to gain momentum. Drills for both are usually set at the same par time.

But what is amazing here is NOT the speed of the draw, but the reaction speed of the officer to process what was going on, making a decision without freezing and executing it. From say, a condition Yellow to Red in less than a second!?!

Sorry for the thread jack but I'm relenting on all the things I've put off in life. Wow.

Regarding reaction speed -- i do not believe we are all the same. There was a display at the Reuben H Fleet Science Center where a friend holds a bar in a tube and lets it go. The test taker needs to grab it as quickly as possible after it is dropped without warning. It will then tell you where you stand for reaction time.

The cheap bar room test is where someone holds a rod at each end across the front of you and drops it without warning. Can you grab it before it hits the ground?

Finally, Bill Jordan has some interesting words on the speed of gunfights in "No Second Place Winner."
