Also, does it have to be featureless to be used at range? -
Kommiefornia Law, you need to apply for a serial number before you can build your firearm.

I've heard some ranges check and I've heard some outdoor ranges, fish and game with sheriffs might check. I've even heard some law enforcement will post up and pretend to be a shooter. I've never seen it, but I've never had to worry either because my stuff is all compliant.
Someone at the range might say something about the features, most don't care. I always ask people with questionable stuff and they always says it's not legal and I always say I don't care and I'm not a cop (what a cop would say). I mainly ask to see if they know a loophole I don't. CA laws suck, blah blah blah
The law is you have to get a serial number first AND for plastic firearm it has to have 3.7oz of steel embedded in the frame.Comment

Be careful. The law has changed.
The deadline to register (make legal) a home completed receiver from an 80% was June 30, 2018.
If you have to hide it, why build it?
If it were me, I'd dros a lower and build it featureless.
cheers! good luckLast edited by L.A. Saiga; 04-19-2020, 8:12 AM.Here's my iTrader feedback: (iTrader score is 244. I have ZERO negative feedback) https://www.calguns.net/forum/market...user-l-a-saigaComment

Any ranges I have ever been to do not check serial numbers.
A gun range is not law enforcement. Be safe and they’ll leave you alone. If they check your lowers, I’d find a new range to go to.
I have some old guns that I bought decades ago with no background check (when it was legal). Hell, I also have some old guns without serial numbers at all!
There is a lot of FUD on this website.Comment

I think the only thing you may run into at a range is if they look for clear weapons before you get a lane and if it wasn’t engraved they would probably say something. Otherwise they would never know. It’s not like they can check registrations. At this point in the game it’s really not worth the hassle for 80% builds. Why chance it? Just buy a manufactured lower and enjoy.Comment

they usually just do a safety check to make sure it's not loaded, Ive never seen them checking out the serial number
I remember seeing a guy getting warned about his pistol because it had a threaded muzzle, they said they wont say anything but let him know it's not legal in CAComment

It's not a legal requirement (not yet anyways, only takes one politician seeing this thread and getting a brilliant idea for political gain) for gun ranges to check firearm serial numbers, so it'll depend on the individual range.
Most ranges are focused on operating their business and don't make a point to function as a form of extrajudicial law enforcement, and they leave law enforcement to law enforcement, but....there has been a range (edit: it was Insight Shooting Range) that has gone as far as to host a gun buyback program, so...
That said, your bigger problem is that possessing a non-serialized firearm in the state of CA is a crime, not just the use of it at a shooting range. Captain Obvious over here, I know.Last edited by LateBraking; 04-19-2020, 11:40 AM.sigpic

If you take an non-features AR to Lytle Creek range (on BLM land), they will want to see the RAW paperwork and confirm the SN matches your paperwork. They are pretty good about it, but no paperwork, not allowed to shoot it. Only 10 round mags will be allowed too. But what really bugs me is i have been there when BLM will pull in and sit in their cars waiting for the range to go cold and shooters go out to change their targets, and the BLM will walk down the line and see what is on the benches. Once, the BLM picked up a rifle from the bench, while shooters are down range and the RO jumped all over the guys, and RO got into it with the BLM idiot. BLM said we can do what ever we want. No consideration of safety. The range has no control of the BLM people. I have been lucky to not have any rifle out on the bench that would cause BLM to take a second look. We do not like it, but a price to pay to be able to use this range.Last edited by SoCal1911; 04-19-2020, 11:49 AM.Comment

Some people have to drive TO and FROM the shooting range.
FWIW I've never had anyone check for a serial # at a shooting range in my 25 years of shooting guns. Seems like it would be almost impossible for long arms, considering pre 2014 there was no registration req for long guns.
(*Not that our schmuck liberal overlords wouldn't try.. but it would be a mess for them for sure)
Sure, You can sign up for cfars account and request a serial for a new rifle build. Be my guest. Firearm manufactured by unlicensed subject has some different rules compared to a rifle built on a dros'd complete stripped receiver. *in the realm of transfer (to your parents or kids, for instance)
Seems like a waste but hey that's just my opinion.
