    Unregistered

    Hello,

my father gave me 2 guns about 10 yrs ago told me they didn't need to be transferred to me, but i asked him recently if he registered them (so i can have them in my name and make this as legal as possible) he told me he never registered them. is there a way i can transfer them to me to own them or shall i surrender them at a gun buy back?

Btw one is a 10/22 rifle and the other is a .22 Mag single six

    Yes, go to https://cfars.doj.ca.gov/

Create an account. You can register the rifles to your name, I think it is called CRIS, there is a link on the left side. Then you're covered, as long as they have not been reported stolen.

Edit: I thought they were both rifles. If one is a handgun, is it very, very old? California started recording long gun sales in 2014, but handguns have been reported since 1924. Did he buy the gun before 1924? If not, it was registered to him unless he acquired it some other way.

As far as I know, that long ago the rifle is fine as is. (Assuming you can legally own it in the first place)

Can’t help you with the pistol. I’m sure someone else can tell you.

Welcome to Calguns Ryan. 1st post. Nice. I think you just fill out a form and turn it in and you're done.

The Librarian will be along soon to tell you about the form.

        Welcome aboard.

                OK a few questions.

                1. Is your father still alive
                2. Is he in California.

                If yes to both
Then search the DOJ and find the inter familiar form.
                Obtain a Firearm Safety Card.
Send in the form and $19. About a month later you will have a registered firearms.

May I always be the type of person my dog thinks I am

The rifle is fine to register on CFARS then it is "yours", I am not sure what the laws were ten years ago with transferring a handgun from father to son. Someone here will surely know.

                  Check this out https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/pubfaqs#5

Says you just have to report the transfer within 30 days. I'd just report that he transferred them to you recently. I mean, he gave them to you ten years ago, but you did not take possession of them and complete the transfer until yesterday. So now you need to submit the form.

Edit: go to a gun shop and get your handgun safety certificate first. If you're not familiar, it's just a common-sense test with questions like "Should you get drunk and play with a gun" or "can crackheads own guns"

                    Repeat after me.
Just say NO to gun buybacks.
Give it some time, someone in the know will be around shortly.

If that dont work I've got a rohm 22 mag only to trade for your Ruger single six.

Seriously though, IF your still confused/considering selling to a gunbuyback outfit??
PM me for my ffl's info and i'll help you with the removal of the evil 22's from California.

If your father is still alive, you do the intrafamiliar transfer.
If your father is passed away, you do an op-law transfer.

Right; when you received the guns, you should have submitted one of those forms for the handgun; as already noted, did not have to do that for long guns until 2014.

But 'registered' is not a required condition to own a gun in CA, so if you don't get around to it, that is unlikely to be a problem with the laws as they are in 2020.

                              30 years ago. I don't see a problem here.

Likely nobody else will either, unless of course they were GATs, Deuce-Deuces, Saturday Night Specials, Shotties, or AR-14s.
