That's been my approach up until now. I started thinking about this because I want to get my FFL03 that requires logbooks to be kept, so I thought "Maybe I should be doing that with all my guns anyway, let's see what the boys at CalGuns do".

I have file folders for each gun where I keep the manual and other paperwork, including the original receipts.

I also have a spread sheet that keeps track of my range trips, ammo use, and gun make/model, and serial numbers.

I usually just keep the receipt and DROS paperwork. If I sell the firearm I pull the documents and mark it sold. There is a concern with a bound book that an overzelous prosecutor could confuse it with a dealers bound book. If it's your personal collection be sure to write that on the cover of your bound book.

I've got info on every gun I've bought or sold...mainly for insurance reasons.

Add to that a C&R "bound book" requirement.

Make, model, SN, number of mags, barrel length, appx. sale value in Excel, some comments such as obtained from a family member.

A warning not to sell Freedom Week mags. without blocking.

The list is more for my family than me, I intend to leave this earth to go to the great free state in the sky first.

Yes, saved in the cloud and in my safe. Used Excel as well.

There's two EXCEL spreadsheets: the first lists firearms, the second tracks how many rounds of ammunition are on hand.

Yes, I keep a record using Excel spreadsheet. Also have originals of DROS, sales receipts & PPT records.
Recently, I've been tracking round counts on my regularly used guns and adding them to my spreadsheet.
When I sell, I move all the information to a separate file. I figure, keeping track of what I've sold doesn't hurt.

Actually, it's a good idea to retain the sale info.

If a gun you sold was used in a crime, and somehow traced back to you, you would have proof that you sold it, and it is no longer in your possession.

Aside from the inventory kept by the CADOJ, I keep a detailed inventory in an encrypted file on encrypted drives that I store in safes at different locations.

All that info along with prices paid so my wife will have some idea if she has to sell them after I'm gone, as well as any "special instructions". Also use it to track trigger weight and a few other stats, as well as ammo inventory.
