    3,000+ rounds w/ my G19...

and never a malfunction. It serves well as both my home defense gun and a CCW gun. You can't go wrong with one. Ammo is cheap...so practice is cheap. How much practice are you planning on doing with a .45?

On a more serious note, if we're talking about your only HD gun, I'd say neither:

For your main HD gun, you need either a shotgun, preferably a pump, or a .223 semi-auto rifle with detachable mags, so NOT an OLL.

I recommend the .223 rifle because home invasions have been on the rise the past few years and it is not at all uncommon for the perps to be wearing body armor, which a shotgun will NOT penetrate, not even at close range.

A .223 however, will go through all but the absolute heaviest of body armor.

Handguns are only for fighting your way to your rifle.

Glock 19, unless you have hands that are the size of baseball gloves.

I voted for the G19 because it fits my hand better. I like both but the G21 is a bit large for me and I feel like I don't have as much control for fast follow up shots. With appropriate ammo, you don't lose much in stopping power versus the .45.

While the .45 may have better stopping power than the 9mm, the G19 will fit the majority of shooters better. So pick the one that you can shoot the best. After all it's shot placement that counts. That's the end of the story.

Its more about shot placement then caliber. With good hollow point ammunition 9mm is so close to 45acp in one stop shot percentage rates that its not worth worrying about. Go with what you know and are comfortable with.

I use G19 myself. But I am looking for G20.

I was told by the local gun shop today that I should stay away from the 1911 for home safety because of the light trigger. He said way to easy to have an accidental discharge. What do you think about his statement?

Imho, in the hands of an untrained operator any gun can have an AD or ND. There have been AD's with revolvers, shotguns, and rifles...

How is a stock weight 1911 trigger any more dangerous than a stock 'SA' shotgun trigger or rifle trigger?

Training is the key... Finger off the trigger until you are sure of your target and have made the decision to shoot....

The 40 cal full size Glock is the one I have (whatever model that is...) and it is just great. Easier to regain target than the .45, less recoil, still a stopper.

In order for that to happen, you'd STILL have to violate one of the four rules. Finger OFF the trigger until your sights are on the target!!!

It always comes down to shot placement, but after a bit of training, I can shoot my 1911 as well as my XD-9. If you're going to be practicing, and devoting time to learning the gun, pick up whatever you want. If you want a gun that you (and almost anyone else) will be able to shoot, get a 9mm.

Besides, a decent defensive 9mm round mushrooms to the size of a .45 anyways. And the military prefers the .45 because they're not allowed to use hollow points.

As to the .45 thumpers, I have yet to have one agree to stand downrange of my 9mm with 16 rounds of Winchester Rangers, though I've asked many times...

Edit: Wait a minute, why are you getting a pistol for home defense?! Pick up an 870 loaded with a game load and 00 buckshot! Handguns are no where NEAR as effective as shotguns and rifles are!
