      well

just get a SA XD then. its a .45, has stopping power, versatile, compact, and its a SA! what more do you want. SA says it all
If it doesn't start with a four, don't bring it to the war.
what about .30-06? doesn't start with a four but was one of the most deadliest and advanced infantry rifle calibers of its time and served in four wars including WWI, WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam (limited action)

Were talking pistols here. Apples and Oranges. I was quoting Col. Cooper.

        And no, I'm not a .45 only guy. I have .40's too.

Of the two choices given I'd pick the G19, it fits my hand and isn't so large my Wife couldn't use it.
A couple of point as an aside however.

If you're dead set the on the Glock and are considering a 'His and Hers' arrangement get a pair of 19s. Your Wife may not be able to handle the 21 and in a crisis having different caliber and size magazines can be a problem. Being able to share mags is not only good sense, it's romantic!

If you're not set on the Glock I'd recommend either one or two Smith or Taurus Model 66's. A good solid .357 Magnum revolver is a great home defense weapon. Two of them in concert is just hell on the bad guys!
You can down load it with mild .38 Spcl wacutters for the Wife to practice with, specialty ammo (Glasers, Mag-Safe, etc.), or full power .357s.
You or your Wife won't have to master failure drills like failure o fire, double feed, stove pipe and more. Got a bad round? Pull the trigger to the next chamber!
Saftey checks, while not foolproof are a fair bit easier. Open cylinder, look at chambers. Unloading just adds two more steps, push extractor, pick up rounds from about your feet.

I love my Hi-Power and 1911A1 but my .38's and 357's are what are oing to get me or my Wife to the safe and the big suff.

Just an opinion and bug in the ear..

            I already chose the G19.

tundraman - are you thinking about buying one? Are you going to go with whatever other people prefer, or are you going to try them out and pick what's best for you?

The Glock 19 and 21 are just two that i am looking at. I plan on trying as many as I can before I buy. I want to find the best possible solution for my self and my wife to choose what works for her best.

So do I but the 9 is cheaper to practice with.

But in a real life situation you won't be "Practicing"
I say get a 9mm for practice and a nice Kimber or S&W .45 for the "real life"

For home defense I'd go with the .40 or .45
When I go shooting for fun, the 9 comes out.

It sounds like this may be your first pistol, is it?

I have a G21 and a G19 - I would be happy with either. If this is your first pistol and ammo cost will be a consideration - definitely get the 19.

                              Get some training.

And that's why I train with my Browning Hi-Power.
A time-tested SA auto that points like my index finger.
14 rounds of Cor-Bon 124 grain Sierra hollowpoint at 1250fps, thats midrange .357 velocities with 1 grain less projectile weight.

I'm not great by any stretch but I wouldn't want to be in front of the pistol, that's gonna sting!
