I was taught in hunters safety to look check any firearm before/when you take hold of it, whether the other person checks the firearm or not. I too consider myself to be OCD about checking weapons, but it's definitely one of those better safe than sorry situations.

I've made a similar mistake once with a revolver. Now, I check religiously and constantly.

Wow, sounds like 98% of the people here have never made that mistake.

Well, I'll admit to it. I went shooting this last weekend with my Dad and brother-in-law. It was only the second time my bil had been shooting so my Dad and I were prepping him on safety rules and reminding him as necessary. One thing we had said was to shoot each gun until it didn't go bang anymore, instead of counting shots. My bil was the last to shoot my 1890 and I assumed he had shot and ejected all the shells.

I broke down the 1890 to clean it and out come 5 shells from the mag tube!

          Lesson learned. And re-learned.

I think that 98% is just right. And it doesn't mean that some of us won't make such a mistake. I try hard not to

Not going into the "transporting a loaded shotgun in your car" issue, I'm shocked you'd have an unloaded shotgun in your house!

No one in this thread ever said they had a loaded firearm in their vehicle. Everyone is just filling in the gaps of the OP's story. Not admissible! No case! No crime!

                          ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!

His wife might have opened the safe and loaded the shotgun when he wasn't looking, or it might have been the ammo elves sneaking in in the middle of the night.

No, guys... The OP, although a good guy otherwise, used an outright lie this time, just to get some attention.
I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute with some outright BS.
