Did something really stupid/never thought I would do

So I opened my safe right now to take out my 870, Rack the action, and there are FIVE rounds in the tube!(None in the chamber). WTF! I went camping two weeks ago, and I guess never checked to unload my shotgun. I have seen people on here say things like "one time I came back from the hunt/range and realized I had a loaded gun in the car!". I thought "How can anyone do that?" I guess there is a first time for everything. I felt really weird when I discovered it was still loaded after two weeks, as I have ALWAYS been sure to check all equipment when I leave from shooting. I still can't believe something so important slipped by me. Wow. anyway, that wont happen again! Anything like that every happen to you guys?

1st rule regarding such mess up such as this: Never admit to have done it on a public forum frequented by LEO.

"A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have." --Gerald Ford
"Government is essentially the negation of liberty." --Ludwig von Mises

Also, I'm pretty sure a LEO has to see a misdemeanor in progress to do something about it, not hear about it on the internet weeks later after all the evidence is gone.

I don't think this crime is worth pursuing after the fact. There are worse crimes being admitted to and conducted via the Internet today, yours isn't worth chasing. Rest easy

It's ok it just makes the LEO's feel better about the stupid stuff they have done and are going to do.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

Somewhere I read about the rookie LEO who asked the veteran LEO why the veteran put his shotgun in the car muzzle down instead of the usual muzzle up. The veterans reply was "It's easier to hide a hole in the floor than one in the roof."

I'm a little OC about checking weapons. I always check ANY gun I pick up, drives gun store people crazy when I check the pistol that they just checked before they handed it to me. It's a religion thing that I'm proud to say I've passed down to my kids.

You're just a safe firearms owner. You observe Rule #1. I wish more people were the same way.

I too chamber and mag check firearms I look at whether it be at the store or at a friend's house. Heck, I even do it every time I pull something out of the safe.

Well, I did a similar dumb thing. I was always so careful and swore I would never make such a stupid mistake. But, one slip in concentration and it's amazing the stupid things you can do. I was warned, I had seen others do it and laughed at them and said it would never happen to me. But sure enough, it did, and I felt like such an idiot afterwards. You just have to be easy on yourself and chalk it up to life experience. Thankfully I'm divorced now and, like you, won't be making THAT mistake again.

There is a last time for everything, man
And everybody knows you make up stories like this to tease the LEOs on this forum.
"I don't know where you came from, and I don't know where you've gone
Old friends become old strangers between darkness and the dawn..."
