Here's my profile: Senior with wife and no kids living at home. I own a SA 1911 Loaded in 45, a 9mm Sig SP2022 (has light and laser), a vintage S&W 38 Special revolver and now a new Ruger PC Carbine 9 mm. I'm not a regular shooter and have fair to average skills. All the guns are in my bedroom.

Here's the scenario: It's 2:30 in the morning and I'm awakened by the sound of a window breaking downstairs and the noise from someone coming into the house.

Here's the question: Which one do I grab? I guess the next question would be is which one I'm most comfortable shooting, right? Probably the Sig Sauer.

For many years I used one of my 1911's-- my stock SW1911 as my HD gun with Mossberg 500 as backup. But the S&W1911 was my bedside gun.

That 1911 had no rail so I recently bought a Streamlight TLR-8g light/laser and added it onto a GG&G rail onto my HKUSP9c.

I've always loved shooting my SW1911 but also like my HKUSP9c a lot and shoot it just as well. I own multiples of each I like them so much.

Good advice on hunkering down and calling 911. I used to have the mindset to go out and explore if I heard a "bump in the night"-- best thing to do is hunker down with your gun of choice, protecting your wife, and call 911.-- and if you're most comfortable with your Sig, use that.

Thanks for all the great responses. I pray this scenario never happens but if it does, I think I'll first grab the Ruger Carbine. You never know exactly how you will react but if I can, I'd also pocket the Sig then hunker down in the locked bedroom and wait for the calvary.
In answer to a couple of questions, no my wife doesn't shoot but if I can convince her I'd like to give her a couple of basic lessons. Yes, all my guns are in my upstairs bedroom but now I'm going to look for a safe place to store one downstairs.

Not true. Guard dogs are not the same as house-dogs. My female GSD will bark at anything at the door but there's zero guarantee she'll attack an unknown intruder. Guard dogs are specifically trained for that work and that training must continue for the life of the dog. Are you volunteering to train the pooch?

For this reason is why I dont have a weapon light .
If I were to shoot in the dark. I would unload at the light.

Wife should call 911.
Now consider a alarm for down stairs.
Do you have extra mags?
I keep my HD pistol in a holster and two extra mags.
Maybe consider a motion light for the stairway.. at least if it happens again. If the light goes on you know to prepare to shoot.

Good advice by the cop if that's an option for you (ie you don't have grandkids in another bedroom, the wife is with you, etc).

Most people are much more accurate with a rifle than with a pistol. I would think hunkered down in a bedroom corner would provide enough space to use the rifle but I obviously don't know your layout. The rifle could be a good option for the less proficient wife unit if arming her is feasible. If the rifle won't work then pick the handgun you feel most comfortable with. If there's not a light on it, put one on. Or if you don't have rail get a high quality handheld.

If you're going to store a gun downstairs, make sure it's in a lockbox. Any gun can be found including one you hide in your double super secret spot. And I gotta believe it sucks immensely to walk in on a burglar and get shot with your own weapon. You can access a quality lock box in two seconds. If you need faster access than that, the gun should be on your person anyway.

Yeah, but how many retired cops are going to wait in your bedroom waiting for intruders to come in? Also, have you ever tried to aim a retired cop in a stressful situation? They're over 200 lbs!! And reloading them is a serious PITA! You've got to feed them, all that noise, and even then they fall asleep.

I'd recommend a few guns rather than a few retired cops, just saying....

I disagree. The best thing you could do is jump off the upstairs balcony while yelling "LEEROY JENKINS!!!"

Nobody wants to have to shoot anyone, and stuff is replaceable.

SOME stuff is replaceable. Take it from someone that's been burgled a lot, some stuff is definitely irreplaceable.

I run an 870 stuffed with #4 birdshot.

Maybe look into an alarm system that has censors on doorways and windows. The system can be turned on in your room at night. If it beeps you obviously have a problem.
