I can buy green paint... I had a cheap pistol that rusted... it was Italian... in 25 ACP....

I painted it with purple spray paint after I found it rusted.... It was what was on hand....

I was impressed with the open carry I saw during my trip to AZ. After seeing real OC in a free state I would feel stupid and ashamed carrying a toy in CA.

        There's an issue here:
        DIVISION 4. IMITATION FIREARMS [20150 - 20180] ( Division 4 added by Stats. 2010, Ch. 711, Sec. 6. )

        20170.

        (a) No person may openly display or expose any imitation firearm in a public place.

        (b) As used in this section, “public place” means an area open to the public and includes any of the following:

        (1) A street.

        (2) A sidewalk.

        (3) A bridge.

        (4) An alley.

        (5) A plaza.

        (6) A park.

        (7) A driveway.

        (8) A front yard.

        (9) A parking lot.

        (10) An automobile, whether moving or not.

        (11) A building open to the general public, including one that serves food or drink, or provides entertainment.

        (12) A doorway or entrance to a building or dwelling.

        (13) A public school.

        (14) A public or private college or university.
The definition of imitation firearm is
        16700.

        (a) (1) As used in this part, “imitation firearm” means any BB device, toy gun, replica of a firearm, or other device that is so substantially similar in coloration and overall appearance to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonable person to perceive that the device is a firearm.

        (2) “Imitation firearm” also includes, but is not limited to, a protective case for a cellular telephone that is so substantially similar in coloration and overall appearance to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonable person to perceive that the case is a firearm.
        so
It was orange and green with blue grips,
might not be a legal problem.

Okay, I did. They all involved people holding or brandishing toy guns that looked like real guns. None involved an orange and green toy gun with blue grips secured in a holster.

Great idea. That would explain why you were denied - immaturity.

You reminded me of that little boy in Mayberry, he was always duded up as a cowboy and eating a sandwich

CA has imitiation firearm laws that apply to toys, airsoft, BB/pellet guns, replicas, and other objects that look like firearms. [PC 16700(a)]

And under those laws, it is illegal to carry or display an imitation firearm in a public place. [PC 20170(a)]

Exemption to this is if the imitation firearm it constructed from a transparent/translucent material or it has it's entire exterior surface painted/dyed/colored so that it is white, bright pink, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, or bright purple. [PC 20175(m)]

Therefore, as long as the imitation firearm you are open carrying is brightly colored it is CA legal to openly carry/display it in public places.

Throughout history, in CA, every time open carry of a firearm is utilized as a means of political protest, portions of the public get scared and the CA legislature is quick to act by banning it.

01-01-1968 = ban on the open carry of loaded firearms in public places.
01-01-2012 = ban on the open carry of unloaded handguns in public places.
01-01-2012 = ban on the open carry of (non-brightly colored) imitation firearms in public places.
01-01-2013 = ban on the open carry of unloaded long guns in public places.

You'd probably get asked to leave a lot of businesses.

I’m honestly surprised that people haven’t approached him with an attitude of “oh, how nice. A mentally challenged person playing cowboy/cop/spy”.
