I used to use my benelli M1 for 3 gun and shotgun matches. The best way to combat what you are talking about is to make sure you are using good ear protection and for me I have to bite down hard when shooting. It almost got to the point of having to get a small teeth guard for myself as it was killing me shooting 200 to 300 rounds in a day.

Generally I find that if I just bite down a little the problem goes away and my teeth don't rattle.

It is really hard to not make any smart @ss comments after reading this. Really hard. OP, you might wanna get a 20 gauge instead of the 12. 20s still pack quite a good amount of energy down range and they have less recoil.

OP, what kind of shells were you shooting? Was it slugs, buckshots or birdshots?

If you were shooting magnum slugs and buckshots, yeah.....it is normal. In fact, you're pretty tough to have shot 50 rounds of those and get only a headache. Some of these shells feel like they're designed to launch something into low orbit, or for shooting down Chinese spy satellites.

Now if those were target loads (e.g. birdshots used for clay shooting), you need to learn how to mount your shotgun properly. You'll not get pounded when using target loads if your mount is correct. Since yours is a 870, you can get wood stocks which can be cut and fitted to you if you want. I believe Magpul also has some adjustable stocks for the 870, those are pretty nice and comfortable to shoot.

It's the vibration on my face, not necessarily teeth chattering.

I've thought about a 20 gauge actually and asked about it here. Concensus was the recoil is about the same as a 12.

Birdshot target load. I have a Mossberg 500. Do I need to press my cheek tightly on the cheek weld?

you have a stock mount / fit problem. are you placing the stock into your shoulder pocket? if everything fits most of the recoil should be straight back into your shoulder. it sounds like your gun is kicking up causing recoil to be transferred into your head.

I've never had a headache from shooting birdshot after informal clay shooting. Maybe slightly sore after a few hundred rounds, but no big deal. Shooting Slugs and/or Buckshot out of a pump shotgun will rattle your cage, but it's nothing too horrible.

It is how you mount the shotgun to your body / technique.
proper fit is just as important.

The only time I had a problem is when I used 1.25 OZ slugs traveling 1600FPS shot from sitting position. After 13 rounds on paper from 50 to 200 yards my cheek got slapped because I didn't have a proper cheek weld. I finished the last 7 rounds with no problem - 20 rounds total. I made a dope card for drop out to 150 yards. 200 was worthless for me because of slug accuracy and my ability.

I would recommend you take a class. The instructor can show you how to mount and modify your gun to fit you better.

I am sorry for the sarcastic response earlier. I thought this was a joke or a parody thread. I have gone through 200 rounds on clays, and I will admit my shoulder will be a little tender, but no headaches.

Put a exact fit limb saver recoil pad. Don't let the ear muffs touch the stock. Square off your feet, slightly bend the knees and slightly lean forward when shooting. You don't shoulder a shotgun like a rifle.

Not a headache but last time I shot a good amount out of my KSG, my shoulder was pretty sore for a few days

Mossberg make spacers for their stocks? Thicker recoil pad? Get a magpul stock for it?

What kind of rounds were you shooting? What gave you a headache, the sound or the stock hitting your cheek?

Sorry for all of the questions - trying to help.

                              ><

For learning how to properly mount, shoot, tune a shotgun for maximum reduced recoil and maximum shooting comfort......you have to step out of the tactical and into the practical shotgun box.

KSG's can be brutal with heavy loads.
