Concussion from shotguns *updated*

I shot about 50 rounds through my Mossberg 500 yesterday and then had to take some ibuprofen to treat the headache. After a while, I shot without putting my cheek on the cheek weld. How do you all deal with the head trauma?

I took Don Ziegler/Captain Dick/trapperjohn's shotgun clinic today at Triple B. $30 for a 5.5hr clinic. What a great service they're providing for members of Calguns! They are great instructors! Technical, patient, encouraging.

I shot 2 rounds and no concussion today.
As some of you mentioned, it's primarily equipment. The synthetic stock is terrible for suppressing the vibrations and recoil. I used a loaner gun - Beretta A303 with wood stock. Felt like a tank, but I felt no pain. The padded cheek weld was very helpful too. Earmuffs caused improper mount so I ditched it; just wore foam plugs.

I'm just joking with you.

I've had 12 gauge model 500 Mossberg shotguns that gave me pain
but that was because they had badly designed pistol grips and I was shooting with that pistol grip all day.

I know most of you Shooters know this but pistol grips on a 12-gauge shotgun it's one of those things that looks really cool but you're truly better off putting it to your shoulder with a regular stock.

As soon as I read the title I knew this was coming. Are you tucking it tight to your shoulder like you are supposed to? The first few shots of some pdx defense rounds thru my 590 gave me a little jaw rattle after doing nothing but shooting trap for a year with my shotguns but brah, put your pride flag down, pull your man panties up and get out there and run that shotgun like a man!

12 gauge shotguns have been unnecessarily beating the sheet out of the uninformed users for decades.

Complaints about headaches first instead of showing a strong desire about proper training on how to
shoot the gun properly is a sign that indicates that a 12 gauge is just too much gun at this time.

Proper mount is key

870 with 3 1/2” -2 oz turkey magnums is a different story
1 ounce 1700 FPS slugs is no big deal

I get concussion headaches from my .50, but not my 12Ga. Shotgun's got a nice recoil pad on it tho (M4). Maybe invest in a better pad?

No need to turn in your man card, you just need to ensure you are mounting it correctly. Pull it tight into your shoulder and get a good cheek weld. With it mounted properly, you should be able to shoot it all day long with out any issues.
You may want to get the stock fitted properly for you. That will go a long way to alleviating discomfort while shooting your 12 ga.
