None. In fact, I mark the sides of my brass on brass I DON'T want back... stepped cases, NATO head stamps, brass washed steel cases, etc.

I've had back surgery so picking it up is sometimes a challenge -- whether it's marked or not. I try to pick up after a shot or two or three though.

With all the ammo "primer up", a quick spray with some toolmaker's dye (Dykem brand and others) will "paint" the flat of the casing. The dye comes off with alcohol (on the casing, not the shooter!) and would easily disappear when the casings are cleaned before being reloaded.

How about using one of the thick sharpies? The end is about 1/2" x 1/2" and lays a lot of 'ink'.

I like this. I'd be using it on rifle hand-loads so I cloud probably lay all the brass out before loading and spray em. It should leave some nice color that can be seen from all angles. It dries like a sharpie would and wouldn't transfer to the hands?

I feel for you bud. How bad was your surgery? I had back surgery back in 2006. Herniated disc on the L-5/S-1. Took a long time to get back to 'normal'. Only the last few years have I felt much better. Hope your back gets to healing fast.

Hmm, I would have thought that picking up more often would be harder on the back. I try to just sweep everything into a pile from time to time by the stall and I use a cardboard target to sweep the brass into my range bag once at the end of the session. I only have to bend over once. I may get a small sweeper brush and dust pan.

^^^^^This. After five shots I let the barrel cool and pick up my brass and put them back in the box they came from. That way I know if I forgot any.

It does dry like a Sharpie, washes away with acetone (even inside the lettering on the cases), and once dry won't transfer to the hands. Even if you handled when wet, simply wiping your hands down with acetone or nail polish remover will clean them up.

I just sweep up everything that's in my immediate area and take it all. Rarely am I shooting next to anyone, but if they're recovering their brass, then I let them have it. If the range doesn't like it, then they can clean the area before I show up.

I just use a brass catcher. Goes into the bag, unzip to empty
