Why not just let the officer do the talking? Majority of the time they are pulling you over for a minor traffic citation and the conversation is limited to "Driver's license, proof of insurance, and registration please" and "please sign here".

If you have that ready to go, up to date, and easy to read and accessible without having to fumble around for them through a trash-trove of empty soda-cans, discarded MacDonald's bags, empty "medicine" containers, stacks of unopened mail, windshield fliers and coupons, used diapers, used tampons, used condoms, and other flotsam, you'll merely get your citation and be on your way.

Unless you're a jerk about it and give him a reason to wonder. If you're getting pulled over and not exuding you're an asswipe in the first place, you probably were doing exactly whatever it was for why they were pulling you over. Be nice about it, take responsibility and own your mistakes. If you can't, or you feel you were wrongfully cited, on the side of the street is not where that is done; you do that in the court-room.

Just take your lumps to avoid a whole lot of unnecessary drama.

Don't start up with the "can you tell me what I was doing wrong officer" (he is going to when he writes you the ticket) or especially what RickD427 cited above with the stupid "There's nothing illegal in the vehicle" line.

Usually simply being polite, even friendly in the face of you might having done something dumb like speeding or ran a light, not indicating you are mad and incorrigible about something so minor, will go a long way toward not having your car searched, and maybe, just maybe, only getting a warning.

I have not been stopped by an officer since 2003, it was for turning onto a street that had limited hours in which you were allowed to turn, and when I was, we had a laugh about something totally irrelevant that I commented on, and he let me go with a warning. I believe he was specifically parked there (motorcycle cop) to cite people just for this reason but he gave me a pass solely because I was friendly about the dumb thing I did, and knew I did it when I did it.

Simple as that, never asked to see anything in my car; yet at least 3 firearms were in the trunk (legally and in legal mode for transport). It just never came up in the conversation.

          .

            ^^^
This is really the best course of action.

I got stopped late one night by a CHP for a loud muffler. He was going to give me a ticket for modified exhaust, but instead gave me a fix-it ticket.

Given the time of night (early am) I think he was keeping an eye out for DUI drivers (I had not been drinking), but needed probable cause to stop me. (my Flowmaster is a little rumbly). Either way, the fix-it ticket was a lot better than a modified exhaust violation.

He was nice about it, and the subject of guns, etc. never came up.

I always hand over my LTC and tell the cop that my Issuing Authority mandates that I inform them that I am licensed to carry concealed and that I'm armed. They never ask about the rifle cases in the back of the cab.

They still pull people over in CA? How chitty do you have to be driving for that to occur?

Unloaded long guns are required to be covered or cased when being transported outside your vehicle as of 2018. Or you are guilty of a misdemeanor. So case your long guns before putting them in your vehicle, and if you plan to drive through school zones or Gun Free Zones you will need a locking container for them as well.

So you are getting ready for a range trip with your buddies and you bring your old trusty unloaded Mosin Nagant uncased with a cable lock through the action and a bolt locked in a separate box, down to the car that is parked on the public street in front of your house. Uhoh, you just committed a misdemeanor!

So make sure you case up your long guns

One of the posters above indicated that he covered his locked gun case with a blanket. I do the same. I cover the locked case and my ammo box with an army blanket for padding on rough roads, rather than an as an effort at concealment.

I would think this is legal, but I assume nothing, given CA's convoluted laws. Would the blanket covered case be considered a concealed weapon?

Note: I do not have CCW.

Everyone is OCD about gun laws but not traffic laws.

No, while the circumstances may be that the weapon is concealed from view, you would not be in violation of the concealed weapon statute. Please refer to Penal Code section 25505 for the specific exemption.

If more people strictly adhered to traffic laws and vehicle equipment requirements, there would be a lot less interaction with LE to begin with, hence fewer issues for those transporting firearms.
