    Getting pulled over with guns

How many of you guys ever get pulled over for a routine traffic stop while you were on your way or coming home from the range and has an officer ever asked to have a looksy at your firearms? What and how did you approach this sort of situation. Asking for a friend that is thinking about travelling with a pistol upper

You mean violating the vehicle code. There's no such animal as a routine stop.

If the officer knows you have a firearm, then they can check to see if it loaded or not. They only know if it is in plain view or if you tell them. If asked, you don't have to say anything or you can say that you have nothing illegal in your vehicle. Even if you are doing nothing wrong, if you annoy the officer, you can pay a price, so you need to decide if it is worth it.

I've read all of these posts about getting pulled over while going to the range. Seems 75% will say there is nothing Illegal in the vehicle and the rest will say there is a secured pistol in the trunk.

There is a chance he may secure you in the back of his patrol car while he checks out your pistol but only a few have mentioned that happening. Other have said they show interest and talk guns for a little bit.

                Gents,

Whatever you do, please stay away from the "There's nothing illegal in the vehicle" line.

It's about the worst thing that you can do, and can likely lead to a search of the vehicle. Please see the "Sticky" on this topic for a detailed explanation of how this works.

The most Important part here is that you are transporting your Firearms legally. When i go to the range I have my 4 pistols, give or take 1, locked in my large ammo carrier with padlocks. I also transport my ammo in the same type of container also padlocked. They should be in the trunk and not easily accessible. So in a SUV, the cargo or rear area. No magazines loaded with the gun and no rounds in the chamber. I lock the magazines with my ammo. If you are pulled over, at least you are transporting properly. If you have a long gun, you can put a lock through the magazine well and chamber. Everything Must be locked!

Yes, I have been pulled over with guns in plain view.
No, the officer didn’t give a darn about them; got a “slow down, be safe” warning.

I have a gun and a loaded mag in a locked soft case. The case goes in my backpack which sits on my passenger seat.

Technically, you are then carrying concealed. Do you have a ccw?

Mag is not in the gun. The gun is unloaded. The mag just rides in the same case.

How is that carrying concealed? Loaded mag with a gun doesn't mean he is carrying concealed.

If you wish to transport a handgun during your California visit, it should be carried unloaded in a locked container. In the absence of a suitable container, you may secure the unloaded handgun in the locked trunk of a passenger car. Ammunition may be kept in the same container or trunk, but the handgun must remain unloaded with no rounds in the cylinder and no loaded magazines in the magazine well.

If you have additional questions, contact the California Department of Justice at 916-227-3703.
