Imagine that a campus cop that isn't armed?! Why isn't the lunch lady carrying an AR-10?!!

Yeah, look how much that helped at Parkland. As stated above it is a huge liability for any institution.

Sorry to disillusion you. I'm sure many here will find the vey idea apostasy, but lot of campus cops, in lots of places, even in Red States, are not armed. With good reason. As stated above, most of these folks have little to no training.

eh, most college campuses are such easy targets for mass attack. don't even need guns.

just a uhaul truck, shrapnel, and pounds of explosive material. drive it into the quad area during a "club activities week" and kaboom.

or if they want to go for the sneak attack, sneak it in as a booth during such an event or as a food caterer/delivery truck and same kaboom.

or suicide vests and have multiple persons walk onto campus (since most colleges are open campuses) and multi-kabooms.

or if explosives aren't available, then just have 2 vehicle drivers in trucks and just go on GTA style rampage driving over the students. have the vehicles at opposite ends of campus, and have one start driving a few minutes after the other, to get a herding effect going so the second truck can get their victims running straight to them in a large panicked mass. and if there is a passenger in the trucks, have them throw out home-made tear gas to incapacitate anyone running for easily run over later if they didn't get them in the first pass.

Campus cops and cops are not the same thing. Campus cops are usually security guard types who enforce parking and make sure buildings are locked at night. They have neither the training nor the mindset to perform a dynamic entry during an active shooting event.

Campus police are P.O.S.T. certified. They go through the same police academy as others. At least in CA they do.

The university of California uses police officers as well as security. The UCPD officers are post qualified. The security officers are not armed.

Just as VF pointed out, duly sworn and empowered by respective statute, campus cops = cops. There is no difference. All provide some type of law enforcement function or they wouldn't be 'cops,' they would be guards.

Opinions on their effectiveness and whether they should be sworn and armed is a whole different matter. That former LEO from UCincinnati Ray Tensing comes to mind...

Massachusetts, Virginia, California, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio - most major institutions have duly sworn police officers.

EDIT: I'm speaking mostly of higher ed. Primary/secondary school security/police is usually in concert with local agencies.

Good point and I plead guilty. Thanx for the heads up and I will be more careful in future thread titles , as words do have exact precise meanings!
