I do have a question though. What purpose would it serve if only people who posted in other threads were able to access the marketplace? Wouldn't you be further restricting supply?
Some people have honor, some does not. When it comes to money, lots throw "honor" out the door. Just have to deal with it or hopefully you find a good honorable guy. There's no way to screen out if a person is honorable or not specially over message boards, texts, emails. If your selling price/deal is not the most appealing but they want it, they'll shop around more in the mean while. Make them leave a deposit or make the ppt commitment to only 2 day max and not wait for a week or longer so in the meantime you can continue running your ad.

How do you usually make them leave a deposit?

Several months ago I had a guy here ask me to do something like that. I had a like-new Colt Commander XSE stainless. He started out telling me it wasn't worth what I wanted, so I should lower the price and travel - while in the ad I stated I would not do that. After several pm's he finally realized that wasn't going to happen. It was hard for me to travel at the time, as I was in the middle of several months of chemo, and I'd told him why I wouldn't travel. A great buyer asked if I could meet him in a week or so, very polite, so no worries. The night before I was to meet the buyer, the previous person asked me to tell the buyer I'd found someone willing to pay more, and he'd drive to meet me. Not only no, but hell no. I stayed polite with him, but people like him make life unpleasant. Just not worth it!

I wish there was a way to have a sleazy buyer/seller list. I know there can be 2 sides to every story, but a trail of pm's would always tell the truth.
There are some people that it's just not worth engaging.

That's why leaving feedback is so important. Let others know what BS they pull.

Non refundable $10 - $20 deposit via Paypal.

If he can't ppt within a couple of days after we agree and wanting me to hold it till his available date and time at a much later timeframe and his membership is new or none/low iTrader, for sure I'll ask for a deposit to hold the gun for him. If he really want the gun, he'll leave the deposit which some has with me in the past.

If no deposit, you can tell him, check back the availability for the gun when you are able to ppt as the ad will run.

Protect yourself and your time for the sale. If you don't then its on you.

I get what you're saying. But just putting myself in the other guy's shoes I would not want to give money to someone I don't know. It could all be a scam.

The unfortunate fact is that we will continue to rely on the honor system. And Hopefully other members here will call out any flakes or shady business.

If buyer with no credentials can't ppt within a day or two, then also unwilling to leave a deposit, then I can't hold the gun for him and the next person we go that can comply to my terms. Nothing more nothing less. The minute you allow or accommodate more than you set out to be and then when things turn south, you'll be the one taking the rap as you invested time and gas and etc to accommodate a sale with no guarantee.

PayPal friends and family. If I see a deposit is necessary I always let the buyer know up front of my terms including using Paypal friends and family for deposit. If buyer does not agree, no problem, no deal and I won't hold the gun to accommodate his terms as he can flake easily just like op's story.

AFAIK if someone sends money as 'friends & family' they can't then say it was for a purchase and get it back.

If someone I don't know asks me to hold something I'm selling I ask for a deposit, if they're unwilling then it stays up for grabs. I've had people not finish a transaction even with a few hundred $ in my hand, but at least my time was paid for.

If someone's an active member it's slightly less likely that they're only here to sell, and if they're not just here to sell it's a little less likely that they'll play games.

Feedback isn't set up for scummy background behavior, as I understand it. It's for things like not showing for the transaction, or playing games/being an orifice during the transaction, as I understand it.
