For home protection I recommend the Glock 17, 34, and even the 17L
I don't like the 26 for home protection because there is no light rail and because it's just too snappy and there's a lot of muzzle rise. I cannot get a good grip on it either as my pinky of my trigger hand hangs off. When I owned one, I barely shot it, so I just gave it to my brother.
I'm not a big fan of the 19 either because of muzzle flip. The grip is better than the 26 and it does have a light rail which I like. (I never had a 19, but I had a 23 with a 9mm conversion which was pretty much the same thing)
The 17 and 17L is what I would prefer to have bedside because for me it is easier to manage recoil and put consistent shots down range. That extra barrel and slide really help control recoil and muzzle flip.
(I don't own a 34, but it is on my list to have one day in the future for USPSA)
Right now, I don't have any sights on my 17 (which was once my HD gun) and my 17L has the crappy stock glock sights, so I am just using my Springfield 1911 TRP as a HD gun. IMHO, I don't understand why some people choose the 26 as a HD gun. I believe a HD gun should be a gun you trust to go to battle with.
(You likely can't get it, but the Glock 18C is actually the best hd gun)
