    Ear muffs vs ear plugs

Is there a difference in effectiveness between the two?

Generally when outdoors, I use plugs. Indoors I use muffs.

But then I came to think, ear plugs only protect the direct ear channel to your ear drum, but sound can still come in from outside your skull via the area around the ear and still do damage right?

Muffs full cover and protect the whole ear, so that means it is more protecting, yes?

    Just a thought to discuss.

In my area, there no longer are any indoor ranges to shoot at so BLM or NF is where I shoot. I use Peltor Impact Sport electronic/amplified ear muffs for Pistols and small-caliber stuff and will add foam ear plugs in combination with the Impact Sports when shooting magnum handguns/centerfire rifles.

I always wear ear plugs with ear muffs, especially indoors

when you wear eye protection / eye wear some sound leaks in the sides since it's not totally sealed, the ear plugs add a little extra protection.

Same, I always wear both. Shooting carbine outside with just plugs is painful

          This

During my RO days, I discovered that either alone was insufficient for indoors and/or when shooting magnums and rifles...

Double plug for sure. Even when outdoors I typically do. Inner ear plugs are not the least bit uncomfortable to me so might as well wear double the protection whenever possible

I guess I'm deaf, never felt the need to double up for indoors before. I use the surefire ear pro for outdoors, works well. I bet doubling that up with muffs will kill just about all sound.

I have been using only foam plugs while shooting outdoors with my 9mm. However, I am in the market for a set of muffs so that I can double up.

I do both. No reason not to. Can still hear well with the Howard leight electronic.

I use both. Due to "acoustic trauma" (not firearms related), I have little or no mid-range hearing. I want to protect what hearing I have.

1911 indoors, plugs and muffs. Outdoors, plugs. Same with rifles except my AR-22. That has a Levang compensator and can be shot outdoors with no plugs, it's that quiet. You hear far more reflective sound off the target area.

I'm 66 with the hearing of an 18 year old.

Why have one when you can have both for twice the price? I double up indoors.
