Btw, nice gun OP. I also carry a G21 SF while on duty.
I know a Bay area City police officer that was stopped for speeding by a CHP a couple of years ago. No "professional courtesy" shown. I know, privilege, everyone should be equal, blah, blah, blah. But for Pete's sake give a person a break.

I pulled off the freeway ( bridge ) and came to a stop near the Sales Force tower .
Because I was coming from my job I was armed with a Glock 21 SF on my belt at the time . I stoped the car , turned the interior lights on and then turned the car off , then placed both my hands on the steering wheel , one holding my keys , before placing my left hand on the wheel I opened both my front windows .

The CHP officer approached and told me the reason for the stop , I answered him that it was my duty to inform him that I was carrying a firearm on my right side .
Because I was in full uniform he asked me a couple of questions and then asked me for my driver's license , I asked if I could retrieve it because it was in my left pocket . He said yes , I handed him my license , he looked at it , thanked me , handed it back to me and that was the end of the stop .

The Officer was very cool , very calm and so was I , during the entire stop the tone was calm and cordial . Remember this was in the Bay Area . Great CHP officers are out there !!!
Good work. This is very encouraging.

Although I'm generally in favor of the right to carry, I think that a city as densely populated as San Francisco ought to be allowed to administer various competency tests before granting a carry permit, such as spelling tests.

For the most part, it's pessemistic assumption, particularly in the bay area where we have years of FUD regarding confiscation of legally carried guns.
            BUT
There have been a few personal stories from established members regarding CHP in LA County informing them that their permit was not valid in LACO. No arrest, no confiscation, just a "chat"... followed by a phone call from the member to the relevant CHP station. It's been probably 2 years since I've heard one of these stories.

Most extreme seems to be the driver is disarmed and the gun unloaded for the duration of the stop, then handed back at the end.

Ya... There's a difference between a legal requirement and "the smart thing to do"
Adding to "the smart thing to do" is "the smart way to do it"
The cop at your door may be experienced and calm, but what you don't see is the high-strung rookie standing off of your passenger fender who is going to freak out if he hears the word "gun"

"Good afternoon sir, You need to know that I am legally carrying on my right hip, my wallet with my ID is on my left hip, how would you like to proceed"

              Or more likely:
"Sir, do you have any drugs or weapons in the vehicle?"
"Good afternoon sir, I am legally carrying on my right hip, my wallet with my ID is on my left hip, how would you like to proceed"

Funny, watching COPS and LivePD, seems that nearly every encounter begins with the question about weapons. The last time I was actually ticketed was 1991. Been pulled over 3 times since then but not cited... last time on 4 wheels was around 2004 by CHP and I was not asked.

He did the right things. I was thinking the same thing- "It is my duty to inform you" is a dated, now odd, phrase- I'd stick to plain English...

And be sure to remind him that CHP stands for "Can't Handle Policework." They LOVE that one!

Yes, the officer may have a different reaction to someone who is more likely to be open carrying in violation of the law. Probably why OP is required to wear his uniform with patches displayed while carrying openly in public.

                            THIS ^^^

An uniformed Law Enforcement [type] individual gets pulled over by LE in SF w/ open carry license and is treated like a good'ole-boy is a non-story.

                            Seriously OP ?!

I cannot say that if I was uniformed open carry license holder w/ same story that I would'a wasted all y'all wonderful CGN'ers time of day.

I read the title with a British accent: "Stoped by CHP while armed"

I shouldn't be surprised by the non-encounter, but I admit, I am. I see LEOs as button men of the Demonrat tyrants.

You did it all wrong. You're supposed to roll the windows down an inch, turn on your camera, and ask if you're being detained.
