Good write up comparing both options. Either one is a good choice for hunting.

No good past 300 yards. Ammo is expensive.

6.8 is great, I have one, but the 6.8 B.C. cannot compare to those beautiful 6.5's. I agree past 300 the G has a real advantage. If shooting long range, it matters all the more.

OP, you will need to reload to save money on shooting long range. You can start for not too much.

Lee hand press, dies and hand trimmers and a hand primer, a $30 digital scale, and a way to clean your brass will get you started, for less than you might expect. Especially if shooting copper ammo.

One more for 6.5 Grendel. Get decent parts from reputable sources.

                    6.5 Grendel

Another vote for 6.5 Grendel. You can buy Wolf WPA steel case for about 30 cents a round to practice and plink.

I know that the AR10 is a good platform for the much larger calibers, however, I have all the lower parts necessary for an AR15 platform build.

I was wondering what the most affordable rifle caliber to shoot would be for use in possible deer hunting or long range shooting scenarios? I don't hunt now but would like to someday, and would like to have this next build be adaptable for this use in the future.

Just wondering what recommendations you all have for fun, affordable, shooting and possible game hunting. Thank you!
The most affordable round is 223/5.56 by far and should be your first AR chambering.
After that, add extra upper halves for specialty tasks like hunting or long range.
Those specialized uppers are going to use much more expensive ammo and specialized mags, none of which are going to be good for general purpose defenseive or practice or training.

The way you have phrased your question, you are looking for the best monster truck for formula 1 racing, but it needs to cost lesss than a ford aspire...

A lot of hunting is done at relatively close range (<300m), especially boar and deer. 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC work fine close in, as do 450 Bushmaster, 458 SOCOM and 50 Beowulf closer in. Humane hunting beyond 300m really requires larger calibers. AR10 calibers allow for a good long range deer gun. For larger game, pull out your wallet and get an AR10 in 300 WM, or just get a Browning BAR or good bolt action rifle.

I have a friend who took a deer at one mile with his 50BMG ALS upper attached to an AR15 lower. Is that long range enough? BTW, his rifle looks a lot like mine.

I picked up a PSA 7.62x39 upper for deer in brushy close range hunting in the Midwest. The state prohibits use of .22 caliber rounds for deer hunting. Plan on using the heavy weight 158 grain soft point 7.62x39 rounds. Cheap and easy to find ammo for plinking and hunting IMO.
