Where to shoot in NorCal off-range?

Hi!

I'm looking for a place to shoot that's not at a range - want to shoot at more than just paper and the only range near me that allows plates and stuff requires a voting membership.

Any ideas for a place that's legal and safe to shoot at?

Sly Park area is good, several places to shoot off the dirt roads around there. Sorry I can't direct you exactly where, I usually just drive up that way and stop wherever it looks like other people have been shooting.

Make sure you pack out more trash then you packed in

Just go to Oakland and do mag dumps on the streets, that's how the gangsta and homies do it there.

Sly Park area doesn't look bad. Can I assume State and Fed. parks generally allow shooting so long as your safe about it? I'd really like to avoid an awkward situation with any park rangers...

@Dano Yep, the fires have been bad lately. Sky is still orange color from all the fires - hope our Fire guys and gals can wrestle it under control!

It is NF. The rangers do not have issues as long as you are safe. Please clean up ALL your trash and if possible the trash of other lazy POS shooters.

Last series in the question - do I need to be a certain distance from the road or something? Obviously not shooting towards the road, but I recall hearing something about being at least a mile from a highway or something...

Can't shoot from or across roads (including fire/logging roads), or across any water, "or within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area" (https://www.gunlaw.com/hunting/)

You can literally be standing in the ditch next to the fire road, shooting away from it. You just can't be ON the road or shooting across it. I would obviously recommend doing it somewhere secluded off a dirt road, at least a quarter mile or so from any paved roads.

Make sure you have a good backstop.

Unless you find an area where there is nothing but dirt shooting steel probably would be a bad idea. I know it was mentioned about fire danger but we really cant stress it enough.

Sorry, it was namely the last section of that page that's relevant to target shooting. I probably could've found a better page to cite, that's just the first one google turned up.

Hunting and target shooting do often share the same laws though - where you can't do one, you often can't do the other, either (though, not always true)
