You have to follow your employer's policies and procedures, but when I went through the academy, I and almost everyone else used our own pistols which were on a approved list. Does your department also prevent you from carrying your privately owned handgun, on duty?
IMO, your department's of not allowing you to use their handguns outside of training, only solves one problem, an officer using his handgun to become proficient and in the process wears out the handgun.
