Yep. Puts the onus on the customer, not you.

Me, I tell them if they dislike it so much to feel free and call for a constitutional convention, because that's the only thing they can do. After the blank stare, I tell them to go look it up, and remind them I'm free to buy a gun on my way home from work if I feel like it, even if the NRA didn't exist. It doesn't win any new freinds, but not backing down, kicking them in the proverbial nuts, and pissing in their collective cheerios makes me happy.

Hostile work environment only applies when the complaint is regarding a "protected class"
If they were giving him crap about being a straight Christian male, he would have a case.
Being an NRA member is not a protected class.

First. Get out a piece of paper and pencil. Write down everything that happened. Not just what was said, but what happened to cause the events to transpire. Write where it happened. Write when it happened. Keep the note pad handy at all times, even next to your bed at night. You will remember small details at the oddest times. Put those to paper.

Second. Keep it to yourself and consult a lawyer. HR is paid by your company. They are/will do whats best for the company.

2A. File initial complaint with HR with broad generalized comments. Don't post all details. Leave room for additional details etc.

Third. Review the employee handbook. Watch for arbitration rules that you may or may not have to abide by. Double check w/above attorney.

Fourth. Don't post anything else online or in email to ANYONE else. Not even to your closest friend/relative/spouse/dog/facebook etc.

        Fifth. File complaint with HR.

Sixth. Look for new job as Plan B.

          It's not there.

I've seen "Political affiliations or activities" only on attorney web sites, but even that is going to be pretty tough to fight since the NRA is not a political organization.
They are not attacking him for being a Republican or a Trump supporter.

Pandora's box is open. Now that they know you support the NRA, you can't force them to like you by reporting them to HR. Just make yourself a valuable employee by being in excellence. A good rational manager will not fire a valuable employee because they support the NRA. If they do, then you wouldn't want to be in that toxic environment anyway.

Another option is to make an anonymous call to your company's whistle blower hotline and report the managers for creating a hostile work environment.

You don't have to be in a protected class to be subjected to a hostile work environment

I chuckle this to myself because a friend of my call the hotline at his work to report time shaving by his manager, he ended up being let go two weeks later due to "department downsizing". Them hotlines is how they get you, to weed out the trouble makers!!

I'm thinking this ^^^. But understand that HR isn't on your side and they're not there to protect you. They are there to protect the company first, last, and always. If they believe you have credible evidence of mistreatment, hostile work environment, etc., they MAY be useful here. Much can depend, however, on what your boss says/thinks about you. I won't say that low man on the totem pole always loses...but generally you better bet that way...because that's usually how it goes.

It should go without saying that you need to document everything in great detail going forward.

You may also wish to start looking for a new job. I'm not saying any of this is right. But the level of stress and BS you may be in for could be substantial.

At your next job...or even the next event such as this, you should think very carefully if you want your political views to be known and the headache that it invites into your life. Again, not saying any of this is right. But not every battle is worth fighting. Only you can decide if this is one of them.

When you stir up the nest, you have to deal with the hornets. Go to HR and make your report. In the future, it might be wiser to remain silent about your beliefs. It can be beneficial to remain silent and receive information rather than giving it up.

That's messed up. Your friend should report it to the department of labor. There are whistleblower protection laws.

From here on out secretly record all conversations with all of them (use iPhone voice recorder) especially if you approach her to discuss this matter. Be blunt and tell her you're afraid you're going to be discriminated because of your views on the 2A, and see what she says. You have to go on the offensive at this point because you've already shown your hand. Good luck and Godspeed!
