Hey everyone, I need some advice and I'm kinda venting (sorry). I work for a major tech company and yesterday at work I had to defend myself for being an NRA member. I device came in for repair and it had an NRA sticker on it. Few of my co-workers started saying some disgusting things about the customer for having and being an NRA member. I typically try to stay quiet because 98% of the people I work with are liberals, some far left some normal that you can hold a normal conversation with.
So, while they're bashing the customer, I told them to stop because I myself am an NRA member and I did not appreciate the way they were speaking because it reflected on my views. At that point, the room went silent and the question came in with great hostility. The whole conversation was how we have so many school shootings and its the NRA's fault for not pushing for strict gun control laws and selling teens military fully automatic assault weapons. I did my best to reason with them but it was no point they kept pushing their own agenda. At this point, I felt like my image was compromised and at that moment a lead manager came in and found out about the convention that we're having. After about 30 minutes everything settled down and I left the room to go and help a few customers out. During this time the store leader (far left Lib) was there and the other manager told her about the conversation. She made a really nasty face expression towards me and I could tell I'm now in some serious trouble. Basically, I feel like they're going to try and find dirt on me and get me fired.
I want to call HR and speak to them first to protect myself but then I was thinking, maybe I should talk to her first and explain to her that I might have different views on things but that does not give someone the right to talk inappropriately about my views. I have stayed silent many times and had to walk out of the room because the things people were saying. I don't know what to do, I don't want to lose my job, I love what I do and have put a lot of time to get to where I am. I don't know what to do, has anyone of you been in a similar situation?
Sorry for the bad grammar...
