I think the DMV should go appointment only. Think about going to a Dr. or, dentist, they know how many people they can possibly serve in one day and only allow that many people to show up.

I just went Thur, made an appointment 6 weeks ago. My current DL expires in approx 6 months too. I was told if I take the exam, they move the experation date out. If I didn't take the exam, the new Real ID would expire the same date as my original DL (approx 6 months). The employee told me when I renew again in about 6 month by mail, I may not need to take the exam based on my driving record. She gave me the choice to skip the exam if I wanted. I skipped the exam and I was out in about 1hr 45mins.

FYI - She punched my DL too

Except you would end up having to make your appointment 90-120 days in advance. If they could get if there as**s, do their f****ng job, and stop giving out licenses to illegals, y would probably help dramatically.

Privatizing it would do wonders, God forbid we take away the jobs from these hard working public employees though

If you've gotta get the Real ID, but need/want to keep your existing one un-punched, why not just say you lost it, you are requesting a replacement, and want to do Real ID at the same time?

Agree 100%. I do my vehicle registration at the AAA auto club. Why not my license?

Hoping mine comes in 5 days! My 10 day wait just got a lot longer
Let me see if I got this correct: You renewed a license that's perfectly OK (had no Federal Limits Apply on it) and didn't expire for 18 months (well before it will be mandatory to have a REALID to fly on airplanes). And you decided to REPLACE it with a REALID which will then expire in 18 months with the same expiration date. So in 18 months you may have to go and do it all over again if from now on REALIDs can't be renewed remotely via the mail, phone or internet.
              Brilliant!

Why wouldn't you be able to renew a Real ID through the mail or online? You cannot renew a non-Real ID through the mail or online and expect to receive a Real ID.

Just because many of us showed all these same papers years ago when we were first licensed in CA does not mean they kept those documents, and they certainly weren't recorded, at that time, pursuant to the Real ID act.

I made an appointmentment at the Folsom DMV to get a real ID license. My license was due to expire in 9 months and I just moved and wanted a license with my correct address. The appoint was 13 days out. They had things organized. Most of the people I saw in line were there for real ID licenses. They offered me the opportunity to renew, but I had to take a 17 question test. I gave them the answers they wanted (not necessarily correct) and got my license renewed. They did not put a hole in my old license. It was one hour from when I turned into the parking lot to when I turned back out onto the street again. My new license showed up in the mail in 8 days.

                      Try a result of 9/11, AB60 licenses didn't come about until 2015.

First of all, where did you hear that you won’t be able to renew a Real ID by mail or online once you already have one? That’s news to me...

Second, my wife’s expired in a few months, and she wanted the Real ID to be able to still buy guns, so I figured I would keep her company at that cesspit of a govt office and get mine done too...I fly A LOT for work, often at very short notice so it’s worth it to me to get it done now and not worry about needing a passport to fly to Kansas.

But I should have taken a closer look at my temporary paper license cause the guy didnt add my moto part to it even though I checked that part on the form.... So now I gotta go back again and get it corrected.... they better not make me pay again

OK, you guys inspired me to update my ID!

Is there any benefit for getting just the ID Card and not replacing the drivers license?

My drivers was renewed earlier this year without real ID and I've not had any issues but read your stories I figure I'll do something.

How much earlier this year? Does it say "Federal Limits Apply" on the front?

Yes, it states federal limits apply.

I did a PPT as seller yesterday which now makes it 5 transactions as a seller and 6 transactions as a buyer, at 5 different FFL's.

Yesterday I even pointed it out and asked so they called their attorney and said no problem as long as you have a government issued doc with my physical address, for which I gave them my water bill.

I always have a water bill because my drives has my PO Box mailing address instead of my physical address.
