that doesnt sound right. it will usually tell you in your renewal notice all that you have to do. If it was written in there that you needed to take a test then obviously you have to.

I went in more than a month before my expiration and no test needed.

I went in 6 month early so written test is needed. For normal renewal with notice no exam require.

I went to renew my license last Wednesday. I made an online appointment and my birthday is in three weeks. The entire process took one hour. I brought my certified birth certificate, social security card and current car registration and got the Real ID. That was all I needed. I took no test, but did study the drivers handbook just in case. I also took the DMV sample online tests before hand.

They did not punch my old drivers license. My old license is still good for three weeks and it can take three to four weeks to get the new one mailed to me. They also gave me a temporary paper license that is good for two months, just in case the new license arrives late. The license cost me $35.

All the DMV workers were helpful and cordial. I was polite and friendly.

I don't believe it, fake news ! Nobody at the DMV is nice unless there are a bunch of empty pods in the back room.

                          Which DMV is this?

I find that the more rural the area is, the more friendly DMV is. The Yreka office is probably much friendlier than the one in downtown Los Angeles.

My experience this week was about the same, appointment at noon and out by 1:15 using the same documents. My license expires in less than a month, but I did have to take two tests for class C and M1 + the vision test and no hole was punched in the old license.

The appointment process has been improved and the employees now know how the system should work. I would not just drop in, get an appointment there were lot's of people who did not and paid dearly.
