They would offer this for at least a couple reasons I could imagine... to boast a higher member count, to get you in the door to renew later, and to get you into the landing page where you might sign up for a longer term.
Honestly though, I can't imagine that anyone pro-gun enough to hang around here wouldn't already be a member. It ain't expensive considering what they do.
