You would still, under CA law be a CA resident. If someone just rents and finds work in AZ then I don't see anything nefarious about moving officially to AZ for few months. Not everyone owns a home or has family in CA.
I could easily transfer to Phoenix divison of my current employer and keep my CA home as vacation home. But I've got only 2 years till retirement and then kiss CA goodbye.Poke'm with a stick!

You can bring weapons into California and register only as a new resident.
California does not recognize dual-residency for gun purchases.
You either are, or are not a California resident.
If you maintain your primary home and employment in California, you are a California resident.- Rich

California also stipulates that you remain CA a resident unless you leave California with no intention of returning.
Posting such intent on a forum monitored by the DOJ is not a good way to establish that your California exit is intended to be permanent.- Rich

The purpose of the topic was to stimulate conversation on the possibilty of being able to follow through with an idea most of us have thought about. I know for a fact some people on this board have done it so I was just trying to see how they went about it. Looks like it’s almost impossible to do legally and if it has been done legally nobody wants to say how they did it out of fear of getting their loophole closed. Anyway, I have no interest in breaking the law and clearly none of you guys have either so no point in discussing it any further.Comment

There is no loophole.
The closest thing is to establish residency, including your job, in AZ, and maintain a vacation home here. Your job, license, vehicle registration, etc... all have to be PERMANENTLY transferred to the new state of residence.
But then you are a resident of AZ and become ineligible to purchase firearms within California.
Federally, you can buy guns in either state under dual residency, but the guns purchased in AZ must remain in AZ.
California closed the only potential "loophole" a couple of years ago when they changed the law requiring any guns obtained lawfully outside of California to be transferred into the state through an FFL.
There technically never was a loophole, it was never legal under California law for a dual-resident to buy in AZ and bring it home, but when they passed long-gun registration, this language was added to clarify the previous law...
perhaps, it actually provided a legal path for a dual resident to purchase a gun in AZ and then import it into CA through an FFL, however, since it would be a dealer transfer, the roster would apply, and the dealer transfer fees would eliminate any potential cost savings in purchasing in AZ.- Rich

^^ Instead of trying to be clever you should have stated this in OP. Would have stopped some of the contentious statements. You now come across as a rabble rouse which we do not need. 325 post in 11 years I wonder where you have been lurkng. Some of us try to educate so people do not get into trouble they never saw coming.Comment

When I move out of CA permanently I will be doing it all pretty much completely and will change everything over to AZ and renting an apartment temporarily. Only tie to CA will be a home I own in CA that I will be selling and once I accomplish that using the money to buy a home in AZ.
Any guns I acquire in AZ will stay in AZ. Especially as some would not be even legal to come in to CA in their legal in AZ configuration such as Mossberg shockwave, Tec-9 or Uzi, things like that.Comment

Or have an AZ DL and a CA ID card. However, what is purchased in AZ stays in AZ. Speaking of which, my tax stamp for my SBR arrived on Friday. Now to get a suppressor. In case I haven't said it before, **** California.Former political prisoner who escaped on 9-24-23.Comment
