I figure pin the can so the whole thing is 16.1" or something, and have the folding stock (of course), should make a dandy multi-purpose unit. Get a 16" 5.56 barrel and a 22lr conversion bolt .... also a nice SHTF thing.

If you are going to have to give up a gun make it a cheap one. Bayonets and daggers make the best weapons in close quarter condition because they go through bullet resistant vests. Unless the intruder is next to your bed you know your house best in the dark and use it to your advantage to get family out and defend yourself. A man who knows his house inside out in the dark and uses a military dagger with a gun backup is not going to get into trouble. Death by dagger is far worse than a quick gunshot. Rooms are barely ten by ten anymore so you are always within range and you know your home and they don't. And where you stab them is not usually an issue if they are armed. The DA might not like it but he is not going to hold you. Something to think about. daggers don't miss but guns do. daggers don't blind you with the barrel flash.

Got it....ditch the guns and use my knife skills....maybe also sleep in a ninja suit so I can launch a really stealthy blade attack if needed?

Why not use a Sig MCX ASP? Have 3 mags to unload on any intruder and be real quiet about it. 30 rounds of steel pellets at 700fps will put an intruder down.

Just an alternative choice.
