Wow guys. Thanks for all the info and options. I checked a couple of the links you guys shares last night and will check out the rest today. I am leaning towards the custom molded plugs. I think comfort wise, that will be the sure bet. She's tried the pink foam ones that are supposedly for small ears and they don't fit.[emoji53]
Her unusually small ear canals is just another thing that has me convinced she is not of this planet. The fact that in 28 years together, I have never heard her fart or seen her drop a deuce is to more. 🤣

op, look for a local dealer in your area for hocks custom ear protection.
amazing how so many people fall for bad ear protection. SF offers worse protection than a standard 3m plug.Comment

If you're getting custom inner ear plugs and and are going to double up with muffs don't buy the electronic ear plugs. The sound amplification quality be dampened by the ear muffs and inner ear electronics are damn expensive. When/if you go electronic get the electronic muffs to go over them.sigpicComment

These are highly rated but brace yourself for the pricing. Also, is your wife able to wear electronic muffs successfully? Many electronic muffs don't cut off quickly enough for me. You should make sure your wife can wear electronic muffs successfully first, before you invest in plugs.
Also, consider that with electronic plugs, "doubling up" may be difficult. I will never shoot indoors without doubling up so that's a mandatory requirement for me. And in that regard, I think passive plugs with electronic outers is the better combination. Just something to think about.

I've tried all sorts of plugs and couldn't find anything that worked remotely well for my ear canal shape.
Then, during a charity match at Pala, there was a guy with a booth who makes custom plugs by pouring a two-component compound into the ear. After trying them, I immediately bought another pair. There was just a very positive feel of cutting off external sound the moment the plugs were fully inserted and created a seal around the large part of the ear. It was something I've never been able to achieve with off the shelf plugs of any kind.
I highly recommend custom fitting (and wouldn't wear anything else). Here is the link to Ear Armor.sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

custom ear plugs. Most hearing aid places can make them pretty cheap, I paid $35 each for my daughter's and son-in-laws pair.
If you want electronic so she can hear and talk normally while safe for shooting, ESP at https://www.espamerica.com/ but sit down before you read the price. I love mine, I wear them in the shop, racetrack and of course shooting. That is the only way i was able to justify the price, I use them in multiple places.sigpic

Great info guys. So I've decided on plugs over electronics. We already have electronic muffs so it would be pointless to also spend the extra cash on inner ear ones.
I am also going to go the custom molded route. Hell... I may end up getting some as well later. I will wait since I don't want to take away from this being a gift to her.
Need to check out all the vendors you guys have recommended.
What decibel rating should I look for?

its not a decibel rating youre looking for but a NRR rating. the higher the number, the more the protection.Great info guys. So I've decided on plugs over electronics. We already have electronic muffs so it would be pointless to also spend the extra cash on inner ear ones.

remember that gunshots are around 140 db and you want to be around 90 db for less than 8 hours.Comment
